Learned a lesson today about USB cables
« on: 12 Dec 2012, 07:30 pm »
Despite being a believer in the value of good analog cables, for the past 4 years I have resisted spending money on expensive USB cables, using an inexpensive Transparent Audio Labs model that I got with a DAC I purchased at some point in the past. I could hear no difference between it, a basic Wireworld model and a cheap everyday USB PC cable.  After reading the latest Absolute Sound list of products of the year, I found and purchased a used Wireworld Platinum Starlight cable.  Well, after a few hours of listening it sounds better, plain and simple.  I don't get the larger soundstage mentioned in the review, but the smoothness on vocals is sublime.  Everything just sounds a tad more real and beautiful.  I doubt if a non-audiophile would even notice the differences, but after 40 years of doing this I trust my own impressions, and this thing is a valid, if small,  improvement.  So it's another case of not understanding, but believing.  I just finished discussing this with a non-audiophile buddy who was a network engineer and spent a lot of time analyzing signals for ma bell and he thinks I am simply delusional and a bit crazy.  He's only half right.

Now the next step is somehow getting things configured so that you don't need the usb cable at all, just an adapter between components. Best cable is no cable.

Best cable is no cable.
Is that a 'theory'? Because I find yes, sometime the best cable IS a cable.
Sometimes the magic happens because of the cable. With no cable, it is just not 'there'

yep
I heard on my system ( modified DEQX, modified JAdis tubeamps, 3 way OB speakers with Visaton B200 mid range drivers all treated with Ennemoser C37 lacquer)  the Locus Design Nucleus v2 feeding a Sonicweld diverter and the difference between that cable and a Wirewold Starlight USB cable was HUGE.. unmistakeable. I listened to this  together with Josef the lead designer of JPlay and we both confirmed the huge difference. Then I tried a 1 inch USB A-->USB B adapter and it sounded much better than the Starlight but discernible less than the Nucleus V2
