Exciting new Canon camera(s)

It's larger than a compact but it has a new sensor almost as large as a DSLR. It costs $800.

Excited about this one too..
I think this one is the replacement now for the G12.

I don't know.  G1x sensor size is only a tiny larger than micro 4/3, but it does not have interchangeable lens.  I'd rather just buy a good micr 4/3 with some good prime lenses.

The new Canon 5D mkiii, on the other hand, is exciting news.

"The G1 X's sensor is 20% smaller than in most Canon DSLRs, but that still makes it 16% larger than Four Thirds,..."

I'm sure that there's a lot of people out there who find the Canon 5D exciting but I personally can't afford a $3500 camera body. To each their own.....

In that case, Canon website just dropped the price on their 5D mkii refurbs to $1750.  In most real-life situations, 5D mkii and mkiii will produce similarly wonderful images.

So far, it appears 5D mkiii will come in handy with very high ISO shots, as ISO 25600 shots and videos look just as clean as mkii's ISO 6400.  All those lenses that were a bit "touchy" on mkii will also focus much more accurately on mkiii with the 1Dx based AF system.

I agree with Tonepub about the G1x. I think it's a camera that has a lot of potential for someone who needs a high quality travel camera in particular. I absolutely love working with my EOS 1Ds Mk.II, but it is a heavy beast that I don't want to lug around if I'm traveling light. I'm using a G12 now for a stealthy light travel camera, but the G1x looks like a higher performance camera from the reviews I've read. DPReview.com's reviewer thought it very likely that it will steal away many potential buyers for their Rebels. Why would they think that? Apparently, few buyers of entry level DSLRs ever bother with lenses beyond that which came with their camera. Heck, I admit when I'm working outside a studio environment, dust getting into the camera body and on the sensor is such an annoyance I'm reluctant to change from my EF 24-70 2.8L.

You hit the nail on the head...   I just wanted a great pocket camera and the G1x delivers.

After reading the reviews, I am not totally impressed with the G1x.  It has to be something substantial to make me give up my G12.  Don't get me wrong, the G1x is an upgrade to the G12 as far as low light capability but that is just me.

The 5d3 will also be far better for sports than the 5D2. It has a much faster burst rate and more accurate AF system. Though depending on what focal length you want the 7D may be better due to the crop factor and 8fps.

My gripe is the fact the actual sensor is the same for Canon 7D, 60D, 600D, and 550D.  For the large price difference between 550D and 7D, in addition to the better body, AF, burst rate, I am of the opinion Canon should have given us a better sensor for 7D.  I guess they'll do it for "7D mkii," likely with a price increase.

In fact, I am severely displeased with the recent pricing of new bodies and lenses from Canon and am torn about buying the 5D mkiii at $500 premium over the new Nikon D800, which appears to give one more for one's money.

Really impressive comparison of 5d mkiii with various cameras including Nikon D3x and D4.  It's almost scary how much better 5d mkiii is over something like Canon 7D and how well it stands up to the much more expensive Nikon D3x and even D4!
