CD Changer Recs
« on: 29 Feb 2012, 12:01 am »
Hi folks,

I suppose this is the best place to post this. Got a call from Dad asking for a recommendation for a CD Changer. Been computer-to-DAC myself for a while now, and never looked much into changers. Anyone got any recommendations? Probably want to stay under $500 and looking for new (though a used bargain wouldn't be out of the question).

Look forward to hearing your suggestions.

I've owned a California Audio Labs CL-10 5 disc carousel for many years. It was considered to be one of the few really high quality changers,  though some purists dismissed it because it was a changer.   Sadly CAL is out of biz, but one can still get service for them.
Here's one on Agon, spare parts and all;

I have a nice 5-disc Sony CD/SACD player I'll ship to you for $100 total.  I can dig up the model # later.   :thumb:  Light use, w/remote and box.

Sony DVP-NC875V.

Full disclosure:  Been sitting idle for a few years, and my only gripe was that it was slow to load and read discs, which I think was a design flaw, not a repair issue.

Roscoe,

I have a Pioneer Elite PD-F19 300 +1 I'd be willing to let go in the $250.00 range. Shipping this thing would be tough, I have the box but the packing foam got busted up somehow. I'm the only owner and had some mods done to it.
Where are you located?
PM me if interested I'll shoot you back my phone number.

Lets not make this a Trading Post thread.  If you have a recommendation for the OP please post it, if you have an item for sale please list it in the Trading Post circle.

Sony SCD-CE595 also plays SACD's. Well reviewed and dirt cheap. Sony style used to sell them for under $100.

Have had the Sony mega changers over the years, 100/200/300. Interestingly all were roughly the same price new (~$400) , a few years apart as they improved the line. Never really had any problems with the line. They are a little noisy mechanism-wise, and at least as of the last one purchased which was probably close to 10 years ago now, only have optical for digital output. It's still going strong in my office system with no complaints. If sound quality is a major consideration they definitely benefit from the use of an external DAC. It takes their output to a whole nuther level.

Purchased a Denon 5 disc changer a few years back for the main listening set-up based on past experience with the brand. It was passable, though not up to their usual quality imo. Noisy, had to open the unit a couple of times to remove discs stuck on the pick-up spindle.

Purchased a new Yamaha unit a little over a month ago off of Amazon. Approx $350 (incl tax), 5 disc changer, has the latest Burr-Brown 192/24 chipped DAC. Lots of extra features. So far am well satisfied, quiet operation, good sound, though am still running it out thru optical to my AVA DAC. http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-CD-C600BL-5-Disc-Changer-Black/dp/B002NKM4C2/ref=sr_1_2?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1330615707&sr=1-2
