Living Room HiFi, a Two-channel Audio System by PSB Guy
10' by 19'
A simple, budget-friendly but high quality system that is an elegant answer to my lack of space. No tuning or tweaks, it's a living room I have to share. All sources are digital, I don't have the patience to do analog properly. Music Player Daemon and RompR on the Salk Streamplayer does digital properly.
Jazz, classic rock, blues, old punk, old country, folk, reggae, classical, lots of stuff...
Small, carpeted living room. About 10' by 19' including the front foyer, 10' by 14' for the actual living room space.
5 "C"s: Couches, chairs, carpet, curtains, cats.
Sounds great to me.
I love the convenience of a music server, but I also love having physical media around. 1300+ CDs are stored on shelves in the upstairs office. They are ripped (using dBpoweramp) to FLAC format to the Salk Streamplayer and backed up to two 1TB hard drives. A few Hi-Res FLAC downloads in there for good measure.
I like that the majority of my system, namely the amp, DAC, music server, speakers, headphones, power distribution, racking and all cabling, is North American made.
Salksound Gen II Streamplayer (with S/PDIF outputs) feeding an Audio by Van Alstine Vision EC DAC. MPD is controlled by RompR on a Samsung S7 smartphone.
Sometimes my wife plays the piano...
Cisco Explorer 9865HD PVR, so this really is a two-channel HT system if you wanted to get technical about it. S/PDIF audio from the Salk Streamplayer, TV and PVR is routed through the AVA Vision EC DAC.
Audio by Van Alstine Synergy Control Amplifier
Salk SongBird QWT in Black Oak (red oak veneer, open grain, dyed black)
Blue Jeans Canare 4S11 with ultrasonically welded locking bananas.
All Blue Jeans: LC-1, 1694A Coax S/PDIF, POF TOSlink, HDMI, Cat 6a
Infinite Cables (14 AWG CSA/UL approved) on amp and DAC. Nothing too special, just better quality, heavier molded PVC power cables. Stock on everything else.
Grado SR225i, plugged into the headphone output of the AVA amp.
Canadian-made solid pine TV cabinet
