Questions about the A/V-1RS
« on: 12 Jan 2009, 07:08 am »
Relatively new here, but I saw the A/V-1RS on the website and was REALLY intrigued by them.  Currently I am using Rocket RS450's for rear surrounds as well as RSS300's for side surrounds.   I don't necessarily have the room for the RS450's in the back, which is why I am looking for a solution to solve that by using an on-wall design and I actually wouldn't mind using them for side surrounds as well, if they would work okay.  That is where the intrigue in the A/V-1RS come in.

The problem lies with this, though...

I don't think I can build them myself.  I don't have much time, I don't have the tools, nor really the know-how to do it.  There is no way of getting these pre-made, correct?

I know that there was plans from Mark Schifter to make the X-OW, which seems very similar, but that's just too far off right now.

Looking at the design, how high or low on the wall are they supposed to be placed/or can they be placed without too much adverse affect?  How close to the speaker can you listen to it without destroying the imagery?  I just want to possibly get more information, in general.

Welcome to AC!

I am using my 4 AV1-RS's with Rocket 760's/Bigfoot center channel with great success.  Here is a picture of my setup (about 16" to ceiling) in a 13x19 room.  I replaced 4 RSS300's with these.

And a few more threads below on AV1-RS.  Just search on it and there are several other good ones that will really help you out.  Danny can probably help with a cabinet source.  They are definitely worth the effort.

Thanks so much for those links!  Your picture of your set up also reassure me of placement, too!

I wonder how much it would cost to have it fully assembled and if that guy still will make the speakers.

How do you like the A/V-1RS compared to the RSS300's?  I had 4 RSS300's at one point, but sold off a pair when I upgraded my mains from the RS450's to the RS850's and so I moved them to the back.  I didn't have ideal placement as the RS450's were pretty close to the main listening area.  I am considering selling the RS450's and RSS300's off anyway, due to me getting LS-9's soon and the rockets I suspect will have a very different sound than the LS's.

I also wanted another solution instead of the standard dipole or even bipole array because I'm never quite as happy with the sound that they put out.

Danny has a cabinet guy, "Eargasm", on the forum that has capability to do cabinets for you.  Just contact him directly.

As far as comparisons, this is the GR circle, so all I can really say is that the AV1-RS really delivers in this particular setup (flat ceilings, close in to listener).  They provide a diffuse sound (but not TOO much so) that just sounds right for movies in 5.1.  I don't listen to multi-channel but I suspect they would be great there too.  Bass is more than adequate for rears.

I have LS9's on order too, though they won't be in the theater.  Trust me that the 760's/200 and AV1's work extremely well together.  The RSS300's were ok, but the field they created just doesn't seem as real as the AV1-RS's do.  More detail, yet I can't quite tell it's coming directly from those sources.

That's exactly what I was looking for, Tom.  I went from Axiom Audio QS4's to the RSS300s and while I really liked the additional weight, the RSS300's were a slightly a step backwards.

In terms of disappearing, they certainly were the better speaker.  But the mid-low range left MUCH to be desired.  The high roll off of the Axiom QS-4's that I had really weren't that appealing.  -3dB 100Hz for the QS4's and 95Hz for the QS8's really lack the range I am looking for.  The A/V-1RS definitely improves upon that with a -3dB roll off at 80Hz, which is about where I would cross over my preamp for surround duty anyway.

At Danny's suggestion, I lined mine with No-Rez.  I broke them in initially by using them as mains speakers for several days and they acquitted themselves quite well full range.  Plenty of bass from them when mounted on the walls as recommended.

I emailed danny in regards to these - I inquired if they would work in my room since my ceiling is only 7' and measuring 16" down makes the surrounds sit lower than I think I would like.

Toms how tall are your ceilings in the room you have them in?

Huh?

The main problem with side wall mounted dipole speakers is that they are a bit like blowing the sound through a water sprinkler. You get a little splotch thrown here and there and a little bit all over the place, but no where in the room can you get anything that resembles the input signal.

The A/V-1Rs will give you the large non-localized sound field without giving up accuracy.

No problem. That will still work just fine.

My ceilings are 8' and these work perfectly at 16" down from there.  As Danny said it is VERY difficult to localize them even though they're only a few feet from listener's heads on the rear wall loveseat.

I will have to measure some stuff out since the back of my room is oddly shaped. I would be worried about the side of the wall by the back row seating.

I think the A/V-1RS are the route I am going to take.  I have a lot of faith in Danny's products and from what I've heard from his designs already, I will be really happy with the A/V-1RS's.

Alrighty, I just placed my order for two pairs of A/V-1RS's!

I decided to get my cabinets done by Elemental Designs.  Thanks for all your guys' help!

Danny, out of curiosity, what's the usual turnaround time for these to be shipped out?  I requested for the networks to be assembled, if that helps.

Normally kits ship that day or the next day. Assembled networks have to be working in with the rest of my work load and can take about a week.

Awesome stuff, Danny!  Thanks for your quick reply!  I am so excited to hear this compared to my current Rocket surround set up. :)
