black at the outermost edges and then raw mdf inside.  not an issue with all grill options (open and closed).

Wow, greatly apprecuated the response and the pictures.
Is is correct that the open back can be configured into a sealed mode? If so, how tightly does the grill hold in place?

Magnets hold the solid grill.  It's a midrange.  How tight do you think it has to be?  What is the concern?

You're welcome.  You get two grills for the back.  One is with grill cloth over an open frame, the other is grill cloth over a solid piece.  They are held with magnets to the inset ridge very tightly.  In fact -- a suggestion for Jim if you're reading --  it would help to add a thin nylon tab coming from the back of the grill frame so the grill can be pulled out more easily.  (That's how tight it is!)

I put my own tabs on with a stapler.

I've been planning to do that for weeks now!

Thought it might be a nice touch to come with though.

I am using the open frame grill and never really bother to swap out for solid one. I like how the SS8 sounds that way.

I occasionally swap between the open and solid back grilles (I usually leave the open ones on).  The solid ones are tough to get off.  Good idea on adding tabs.
