Initially NuForce had 50 steps of volume control, and customers complaint that it was too little.
It was then changed to 200 steps, and customers said it's was too much.

The situation today is a natural resolution of a 128-step volume control in 0.5dB per steps.

I have a P8 and to be quite frank....the volume control sucks. Why not use a window with digits and a much faster respons from the remote?

Some stepped volume controls are multi-range to get around this problem.  I.E., they start out at 2-3 db steps on the lower extreme, change to 1 db, then to .5 db.  I've seen a couple that were two-range, as well.

Seems to me this would solve the problem, if the ranges were selected properly.

I like the dual volume controls on my Audio Research SP-15.
It has a 'large step' attenuator next to the standard volume control. Very handy, if not the latest in transparancy.
I would think if a digital control was used: have it also be able to be reset to a variety of step settings. Even (i think the ARC Ref 5 preamp does it) Each input has it's own setting so the different sources will be at the same on the main volume setting.
I am unhappy with my preamp (Bryston BP-26) using digital sources. The volume is only good in the first 15% of the knobs travel, but using  the phono  the volume is just right.
