Open baffle sub locations to try
« on: 12 Aug 2024, 06:08 pm »

Are the subs too close to the wall? They aren’t finished yet, still need to build the amp boxes. But would like to know the locations I should experiment with or the spot most likely to work well.

One thing about the OB subs is you don't have to have them vertically oriented.  You can also lay them down on their sides if that gives you more options for placement.  If it were me, I'd lay the subs on the side and put them on the inside edge of the speakers instead of the outside edge of the speaker.

If possible, try them at 3ft from the front wall and 4ft from the side walls to the rear of the cabinets.

Tow them in towards the listening position.

Has worked well for me with the 12in OB servo subs.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll start we’re they are and listen and measure. And see what I get. Since I use a 100 inch projector screen sometimes. Maybe laying them on the sides in the middle would be the better option.

Thanks Tyson. That is how I set them up, completely new level compared to the sealed Ultimax subs. I didn’t even try different settings from my starting point. O phase shift running at 60hz a bit over halfway volume. The Ultimax were boomy and muddy without any EQ, these smoke em even without any EQ. Plenty of punch, I don’t see it how some people experience not enough punch compared to sealed subs.

Happy to help!  Not all OB subs are on the same level as the servo subs from Danny, these guys are pretty special.

It’s crazy, these subs improved the whole spectrum of the sound quality. I can honestly say I won’t be looking to upgrade the speaker system ever.

Very cool.  Good for you, and quite a compliment to Danny.

Yeah, many audiophiles won't understand this point unless they experience firsthand what real bass ought to sound like and how it uplifts the entire musical spectrum. Most box subs can't do that.

Today I moved the subs around and took some measurements. Basically it didn’t change the response much, just the output level slightly. I ended up putting them behind the speakers close to the sidewall. That way they are more out of site and don’t interfere with the projector screen. I have a room mode at 37hz, so I managed to flatten that out with the subs EQ.

It changed the sound staging some, I don’t know if it’s better or just different. More listening needed to figure that out. And  maybe try some more fine tuning of the crossover frequency.

It's a never-ending process. I tweak the sub settings nearly every time I make a change to my system.

I can picture myself back there tweaking the settings often to see what changes I hear. I might try moving the subs a little further back away from the speakers closer to the front wall. Am I right thinking you don’t want to impede the back wave of the speakers too much?

I hear better ambience, and more solid or defined imaging. Obvious better bass definition. So I accomplished something today.

The less things between the speakers the better.  I also run my subs behind my Oticas.

Yes it’s true, especially with these speakers. I now have the subs 3.5 feet from the front wall, behind the speakers, though not directly behind them. Almost against the side walls. This so far gives more, plenty of punch and believable soundstage compared to being in line or right beside the speakers. I don’t think I’ll do much measuring for a while at least, may tinker by ear the settings some more.

Measuring gets on my nerves too much, and honestly believe you still need to move the subs and listen anyway. If I had a better understanding of the measurements, maybe it would be more helpful. It basically just showed me the room mode in the sub range which wasn’t hard to fix.

Also I don’t like a flat response, I prefer a lift in the bass response.

Yep. I learned that lesson during my HT days when I used software to manage my bass. A flat response sounded flat. Since then, I've relied on my ears.

Do you think the super 7s suffer due to the cabinet design with regards to the subs?

Good to know!
