What Van Alstine amps do you have?
« on: 9 Aug 2012, 02:05 pm »
This is a fun topic-what Van Alstine amps do you have?  I've been collecting them for a long time.  I currently have four-a 600R, a 350 Ultra, an updated dynaco 150 (with 3 large caps in it!, and finally a FET-Valve 150 in a Dynaco Chassis.  I use the the 600R to drive my main speakers and the 350 to drive a pair of subwoofers.  My next amp would be a updated Hafler 280, just because I like the look of the amp.

Just so you know, we can't convert Hafler amplifiers to our new Synergy circuits.  There is not enough physical room for either the large 300/450 audio boards that combine the audio and regulated power supply circuits, or with the new separate regulator - heatsink assembly for the smaller chassis units.

We can however convert your old Dyna 150 solid state amplifier to a Synergy 300 as there is enough chassis space for the new regulator circuit module (regulator board mounted on separate purpose designed internal heat sink).

Frank Van Alstine

Insight 250 + - Frank built the Insight onto my original Hafler DH200 chassis, I re-chipped to the +

Fet Valve Ultra 500

Omega 240-3, currently resting & looking for a place to work since disassembling the combo 2 ch/HT system where it drove the C/RR/LR of the 5.1 system.

Only 3 JD, it seemed like you would have to list them in columns.

Insight+ Control Amp. It started out life as an Insight, it was upgraded to "+" when I bought it. I also had the speaker defeat switch added since that wasn't originally included. It's a fabulous amp, but I want some tubes in my system, so it will soon be replaced with a Synergy 240 and a T8+.

Got to admit with the sale on I have been considering an UltraValve, just a matter of whether I can squeeze the budget enough.  :thumb:

Geez, I feel so inadequate. I only own one, an Insight+250 in a Hafler chassis I guess I'll have to get another.

I have a AVA OmegaStar Insight+ 500 amplifier in a good Hafler chassis that I just love. I just listed it for sale on US Audio Mart for $600, proceeds to go toward a new Synergy 450!

Let's see.  I have the Fet Valve Ultra 550 and the Insight 240/3 in the HT system and an Ultimate 70 in the office listening area.  I may sell the Ultimate 70 to finance upgrades on the HT amps.

Insight+ 240 in Dyna ST-150 chassis (Stock amp purchased in 1979).
Synergy 300.  (Originally an Omega 3 260 from 1995).
Ultravalve (2010).

I have trouble with separation anxiety.

I have an Omega III (Dyna chassis). Would love to trade it in for a higher-power Synergy amp but that will have to take a backseat to more pressing needs...like a new preamp and turntable.  8)

Do you guys find rolling the Fet Valve tube makes a difference?  It wouldn't as I understand the amp's inner workings.

In this thread-- http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=108658.msg1120598;topicseen#new -- about the Absolute Sound review of the new FET Valve amps the reviewer talks about rolling tubes and his preference as well as a couple of the owners impressions. I own the last generation of the Fet Valve and you can hear tube differences at my house. 8)
