Supporting DSD files via BDP-1 or BDP-2

James or Chris,

Will you be supporting the playing of DSD files anytime soon?

Thanks,

George

George,
A workaround may be to see if the players will allow for a DoP-embedded FLAC file, like what some are doing with EDO'd Squeezeboxes.

Since the BDP allows you to select the MPD 17.0 version, support for DSD is already there, at least beta if it's not officially announce.  You just need a DSD DAC that support DoP.

Ah, good point.  Yes, I ran MPD 17.0 with Auraliti, and it transported DSD(via DoP) wonderfully.

Although MPD 0.17.2 supports DSD, our kernel doesn't; meaning if we do introduce DSD support it won't be until manic moose is released.

Chris

So what about passing DoP'd FLAC?

Hopefully BDA-3 will be released too?    :)

Hi James and Chris,

I would be very interested in knowing as well if the BDP-2/BDA-2 will support DSD anytime soon.  I know that the DACs in the BDA-2 can decoded DSD so if I remember correctly it was mainly a software development project.

Cheers,
John

I don't believe so.

Hi Folks,

Until we release the new BDP-2 software (Manic Moose) we will not be able to decode DSD.

Hi James,

Thank you for the update.  Do you know when you expect the new software to be released?  There is no rush on my end because 95+% of my music is non-DSD.

Cheers,
John

Hi James,

Great to see your considering still DSD-support. Still, don't wait too long... http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/high-resolution-audio. Or the Lumin and ExaSound products on http://www.computeraudiophile.com homepage for that matter.

Seems hires multiformat audio and user-experience/convenience finally reached a breakthrough, and competition is getting tougher by the day.

Cheers,
Marius

Yes it looks like finally products like the BDP are gaining acceptance. :thumb:  The market has come a long way since we first introduced the idea of the BDP and the playing of high resolution files.

Technically PCM is better, but off course Sony and others interested in making money will market DSD as the audiophile format that people serious about sound should be buying. Unfortunately.

Bryston SP3' Bryston 6b-sst, 3b-sst, BDA-2, Dynaudio Confidence C2 (front), Dynaudio SCX (center), Dynaudio Audience (rears), ocos speaker cables, Vertere USB D-FI DD and most Bryston interconnect cables

Hi Ollie

It is difficult as a manufacturer to try and provide our customers with the latest and greatest but juggling that with the realities of the science vs the power of large companies to affect the buyer is a tough one.

Would the Manic Moose software be able to install in BDP-1 and decode DSD as well, James?

Thanks.

I think so but I will leave this for Chris to answer.

After the release of Manic Moose for the BDP, how long would we wait for the DSD software upgrade for the BDA2 DAC? It is reasonable to assume that most people with a BDP also own a BDA2 and would like to have DSD-capable system.

Cheers!

Hi Antun

I really do not know as we are still looking at what software is needed to do DSD on the DAC and the licensing issues involved.

Hi James!

Perhaps it would help to see which other DSD-capable DACs that use the same or similar hardware are out there.

Fostex HPA-A8 comes to mind because it uses the very same AK4399 converter (just not two of them) and supports DSD from both SD card and over USB. I don't know about the Lynx Hilo converter as it's hardware is undoubtedly different but then, it has an open-source interface and so could be easier to study.

I think DSD is not really so much of a necessity from sound quality perspective but rather the wish of industry to induce yet another cost on us by making us believe it is something we need. I'd much rather they perfect the PCM technique. But if you are going to have a DSD-capable BDP, it would still be nice if both the BDP and BDA had this capability.

Cheers!
Antun
