Of particular interest for me because of Joe Bonner's piano playing.

A great disk from Coltrane.  Note that the reissue disk has 11 songs instead of 7.

Samples: Coltrane Plays the Blues (Original recording reissued)

Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); McCoy Tyner (piano); Steve Davis (acoustic bass); Elvin Jones (drums).

Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on October 24, 1960.

Record Collector (magazine) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] an authority that, on the likes of 'Blues For Bechet' reflects Coltrane's increasingly diverse tonal explorations."

Red Garland Quintet
All Mornin' Long

Not sure why I couldn't upload this image last night, but here it is belatedly.  My first time hearing this record, and while not bad, I don't think it's as good as the ones below.

Another quick expression of appreciation.....

Listening to Red Garland's "Groovy"....another 'first in my life'.

While I was growing up, my father would listen to mostly Latin music too loudly (and a little ABBA) because he and my mother loved to dance. He never shared any of it other than to blast it into our living room which only made me cringe from it. Anyway, I was seldom exposed to Jazz.

Thanks!  :thumb:

A nice collaboration between Steve Kuhn and Joe Lovano.  Extremely well recorded too.

Samples and review: Steve Kuhn Trio - Mostly Coltrane

Steve Kuhn Trio: Joe Lovano (tarogato, tenor saxophone); Steve Kuhn (piano); David Finck (double bass); Joey Baron (drums).

Reviews:
JazzTimes (p.62) - "The fascination of this album is to hear them, in their maturity, venture in and out of Coltrane's spiritual domain, drawing inspiration for their own spontaneous testaments..."

JazzTimes (p.36) - Ranked #21 in JazzTimes' "Top 50 CDs of 2009."

Samples and review: Thelonious Monk -Big Band and Quartet in Concert

Down Beat (11/94, p.64) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...detailing the contextual contrasts created by the program's rotation of big-band and quartet performances....orchestrations were more cogent than those used at Monk's 1958 Town Hall concert..."

Recorded live at Lincoln Center, Philharmonic Hall, New York, New York on December 30, 1963.

Starchild, have you ever heard this one?  Is seems to be a bit more obscure--I picked it up at a used record store.  The record's not in great shape, but the music is decent, and it does seem to be somewhat rare.  Oh, and it was recorded by Rudy van Gelder.

No I haven't.  I've noticed there's a lot of stuff being packaged as downloads lately from catalogues such as Prestige that look very interesting.  I've seen a Red Garland at Moodsville series on Ponomusic  that was intriguing.
