Marcin Wasilewski Trio, "January"

They do a wonderfully beautiful version of Prince's "Diamonds and Pearls" on here.

Review excerpt ...
This is the young Polish piano trio that surfaced with that country s veteran jazz-trumpet star Tomasz Stanko
a few years back, and made a big impact on their own account with their debut for ECM in 2005. Part of the
group s secret is the patient ease with which they intertwine impressionistic music and powerful pulses, and
here Wasilewski's strong originals once again give much of the set its backbone ... The album may not appear
to be trying to hit you between the eyes, but in the long run it does that anyway. --The Guardian (UK)

Samples: Cannon Re-Loaded: An All-Star Celebration of Cannonball Adderley

Personnel: Tom Scott (alto saxophone); Nancy Wilson (vocals); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); George Duke (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer piano, Wurlitzer organ); Larry Goldings (Hammond b-3 organ); Dave Carpenter, Marcus Miller (electric bass); Steve Gadd (drums).

Reviews:
Down Beat (p.60) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The band has a close-in feel, with saxophonist Scott's history of pop/funk jazz well-suited to the material. Trumpeter Terence Blanchard serves as the perfect foil for him..."

JazzTimes (pp.122-123) - "Along with keyboardist George Duke, drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Marcus Miller and trumpeter Terence Blanchard, Scott gets to the cheery caramel center of the Adderley aesthetic."

I can't fiond any samples but this is a damned good disk!

From Allmusicguide:
The most unusual aspect to this Novus CD is that James Moody, in addition to his usual tenor and alto, also plays a bit of soprano. Joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Todd Coolman and drummer Akira Tana, Moody alternates between interpreting standards and group originals, sounding quite beautiful on "When You Wish Upon A Star." Even at age 65, he was still very much in his musical prime. ~ Scott Yanow

Archie Shepp with Tommy Turrentine, Charlie Hayden, Beaver Harris and two trombones (Grachan Moncur III and Roswell Rudd) with Howard Johnson on tuba. Wow! The opening tour de force burner , "Portrait", rips it up a bit.

This well-worn album was among a handfull of others that first sent me down the slippery slope.

Samples: Dr. Lonnie Smith - Jungle Soul

JazzTimes (p.73) - "JUNGLE SOUL fuses intricate rhythms and soul jazz. Spare, sinewy and taut, it has a quietly insistent force, an undercurrent that pulls all -- including the listener -- along with it."
