Samples: The Modern Jazz Quartet - Blues at Carnegie Hall

Modern Jazz Quartet:
Milt Jackson (vibraphone); John Lewis (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Connie Kay (drums).

Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York in April 1966.

JazzTimes (12/94, p.134) - "...a viable selection for collection-building, as the blend of Milt Jackson's relaxed bluesiness and John Lewis' well-versed classicisms are seamlessly joined throughout this largely blues-based program..."

Sonny Stitt, a two-fer: "Burnin'" and "Sonny Stitt".

Tracks for "Burnin'" and "Sonny Stitt" were recorded in 1958. "Sonny Stitt" was released by Argo in 1958, but "Burnin'" was not released by Argo until 1960. These have not been released separately on CD yet, but I did get this two-fer issued by Fresh Sound Records out of Spain (2009).

Sonny Stitt, another two-fer: "Blows the Blues" and "The Hard Swing".

The first eight tracks of this album are, in fact, the entire title album that was recorded in Los Angeles in December, 1959 and released in 1960, "Sonny Stitt Blows the Blues". The remaining tracks comprise the complete album titled "The Hard Swing" that was recorded earlier that year in NYC in February, 1959 and released the same year. Again, on Fresh Sound Records, Spain.

A very interesting and well done disk by Nicholas Payton.  Nice hat too.

Nicholas Payton - Into the Blue

Personnel: Nicholas Payton (vocals, trumpet, synthesizer); Kevin Hays (piano, electric piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Vicente Archer (acoustic bass); Marcus Gilmore (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion).

Recording information: Piety Street Studios, New Orleans, LA (09/13/2007-09/17/2007).

Down Beat (p.69) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The work here is settled and comfortable....'Blue' carries subliminal hints of the final bars of 'Lush Life.'....'Fleur De Lis' has a clever line..."

JazzTimes (p.105) - "Payton turns in a strongly evocative performance on a rendition of Jerry Goldsmith's atmospheric 'Chinatown'....INTO THE BLUE may be Payton's most satisfying outing to date."
