Wiring a new room - any tips?
« on: 16 May 2003, 03:53 pm »
We built an addition on the house recently, and there is one room in the basement that will be all mine (eventually, when one of the offspring returns to college this fall, but that's different story).  The room is approximately 17 x 20, cement floor, three sides drywall packed with fiberglass insulation.  The fourth side is presently a concrete wall and is where I plan the stereo to go.  I plan on building a 2x4 false wall (drywall) attached to that concrete wall and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how I should wire this.  A dedicated circuit is doable, is there anything else I should do to tweak the wiring behind the walls, so to speak?

I will be starting from scratch assembling the audio system, if that matters at all.

First of all, figure out how many outlets you think you will need and double it!  Spread them out a bit too.  Second, find someone that knows a bit about ground loops and try to wire accordingly.

Check out www.rivesaudio.com for room tips.  I'm sure there may be more sources for room construction info.

Is this going to be an audio and video room or just audio?  I would recommend two dedicated circuits if this is going to be an all out entertainment room.  If just audio you should be good with one dedicated circuit.

Audio and computer only.  With luck it will be both TV and telephone free.

I would recommend running a SINGLE 20-amp circuit to 3 or 4 closely spaced quad outlets using 10-gauge copper ROMEX.  The single circuit will mininize ground-loops and the 10-gauge wire will minimize voltage drop due to resistance and inductance.  This is what I do in my reference rooms.
