Strange problem Bi-amping my Model TC-1 center speaker

James,

I have been running my TC1 speaker with a 7B3 for a while. I decided to trade in the 7B3 for a 4B3 and bi-amp the center.

So i ran a splitter on the interconnect from the center channel into the 4b3, so i could now use both channels.

I removed the jumper bars between the binding posts.

I was then going to run a speaker cable from each channel of the 4b3 into the TC1.
One speaker cable to the top binding post, and one cable to the lower binding posts.

BUT, before i hooked it all up i decided to just hook up just one speaker cable first to the bottom binding posts. To my surprise sound was coming from ALL the speakers
instead of just the 2 woofers. So i then moved the speaker cable to the top binding posts and ALL speakers were active again including the woofers
which shouldn't be. As stated previously the jumper bars were removed.

So i removed the plastic cover with the binding posts to see if there was a wiring mix up. One wire had it's positive and negative hooked up
to the top binding post. The other wire had it's positive and negative hooked up to the bottom binding post. So from this point it all
looked ok. Both the wires were plugged into an internal board inside the speaker.

SO i am guessing that there maybe something strange going on with the internal wiring.

Did some further testing with a 9 volt battery to try a polarity test. Very interesting results.

I took the internal wire connected to the BOTTOM binding post(supposedly the woofer). I touched the wire to the battery -positive to positive and negative to negative.
The woofers pushed OUT and and the midrange speakers were sucked IN

I took the internal wire connected to the TOP binding post(supposedly the midrange and tweeter). I touched the wire to the battery -positive to positive and negative to negative.
The woofers pushed OUT and and the midrange speakers were sucked IN  - Same result as with the other binding post.

HI

Let me ask the factory.

I know on the TC1 the woofers are in phase and the mids and tweets out of phase electrically.

Hi Adol

I checked with the factory:

Hi James

The polarity he is seeing is all correct.  The mids should suck in.  In 3-way systems it is often required to wire the mid electrically out-of-phase in order for it to be acoustically in phase.

There are two traces that need to be cut on the circuit board that run between the input wires of the LF and HF inputs.  It would appear as though these are not cut as the upper and lower inputs are acting as though the bridging bars are still installed. We don’t test if these traces have been cut because we test everything with the bridging bars in.  On the more recent units we have already removed those traces from the circuit board so it is not necessary to check anymore.

I would also recommend using one larger amp over 2 smaller units.

Thanks James,

So he is saying that i cannot bi-amp   :o

Very surprised that this was NOT tested at the factory.

I already traded in my 7B3 for an 4B3.....  to do this.

I expected this as an option when i purchased this speaker, as it was advertised as doing such.

How do i get this fixed.

I would say we should get it back to the factory for you to get it fixed.
