Soylent - Never Have to Worry About Food Again
« on: 8 Apr 2015, 05:38 am »
True story -

A friend's son works in Northern California for Google, these 20 something techies can work long hours and don't cook so they have taken to drinking Soylent for meals. They think why waste time eating when there are more important things to do?

So... my friend tells her son Soylent is made from people and he and his friends don't get it.  :duh:
Our entire cultural history has disappeared in a generation. Poor Charlton Heston, at least he shows up in The 10 Commandments every Easter.

Never tried it myself, too old school.

They really should know who Yossarian is if they are immersed in the corporate environment.
They should also hope their health plan includes the services of the pros from Dover and and an exclusionary provision covering nurse Ratchet.

I was wondering if baby formula wouldn't work just as good, blend in some oatmeal, a banana and a little cinnamon to make a nutritional gloppy drink. Of course Enfamil does not sound so cool as Soylent.

I arrived at my drink inspiration when we found some puppies. The litter was just dropped just off at the park, my girlfriend pick one up, handed it to me and said congratulations, it's a girl. These little guys were probably only a week or two old and we didn't think they were weaned yet. I bought puppy formula and a baby bottle but unfortunately it didn't work. So I got a bag of puppy chow and blended it with the formula to form a gruel which they eagerly lapped up. I never saw pups grow so fast and they were able to climb over every barrier I put up. A local volunteer puppy adoption group found them good homes.

That is because all those puppies were born long after the 1973 film Soylent Green.

Soylent Green is People!!!

I wonder why the manufacturer chose that name. Sick Joke or ignorance?

True, but there's always this which came about in the early 90's

Even had they not seen Soylent Green, perhaps there was a little more chance they saw this......which is funny (though less-so) even if you haven't seen the movie.

All foods from soybeans arew bad to health.
Soy decalcifies bones and is very bad for male virility.
The people who consume more soy in the worls are Asians and their physical body is small and thin.
Soy is bad for all muscles, including that.

Soy consumption can have some negative aspects, particularly for men, I agree.
But making such a broad statement about soy consumption and applying it to an entire race of people is not only incorrect, but just wrong. While I'm sure soy consumption may have some effect on their physical traits, I would wager that over the course of history, it has EXTREMELY little to do with their genetics. You're making an unscientific assumption they would grow larger frames if not for soy consumption.

Something to note is that parts of Asia are extremely populated (over populated). How does this bode for your statement? Wouldn't these high soy consuming countries' male populations have virility issues? Maybe they don't actually eat as much soy as you think, or maybe their soy consumption is balanced out with the consumption of other foods.

The biggest proof soy food is bad for humans is its endorsement for media and various medical big companies.
Iam entirely afraid(out) of soy food.

Some more info on soy. At least the medical reports linked in the article indicate that there is nothing wrong with consuming soy, especially for men.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19524224
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20378106

You might also be extrapolating too much from the soy myth. If soy was indeed stunting Asian men's growth, it doesn't explain how Asian women also tend to be smaller. It also doesn't explain vastly populated Asian countries that do *not* consume soy - and are also smaller in size compared to Causasians or Africans. The Indian subcontinent is one example.

Based on my admittedly limited knowledge, Asians of Chinese race lack a genetic mutation that makes them lactose intolerant. Hence they substitute animal milk with soy. So soy is not a meat substitute but milk substitute.

Another thing: Although this product is called soylent, I don't think it contains soy at all. Although I am not 100% sure, I believe it is primarily made of "maltodextrin, rice protein and oat flour along with key vitamins and minerals". Yes, it is named after the infamous "soylent green" but it is more of an inside joke than anything.

Here's an article about a person who lived on Soylent for a month.

The prob are medical companies are not a reliable source for info.
Soy is the same case of transgenical seeds/food.
But if you believe they...

I should have clarified in my earlier post. I do share your concerns about soylent and soy in general. In fact, I didn't realize the health issues until you posted. All things considered, I will avoid soy (which I don't eat much anyway). And yes, real food is real food.

I also don't know what transgenic food means - will have to read it up.

Debating the pros or cons of GMO food is, in my opinion, as dangerous as debating religion or politics.  :nono:

On the topic of Asians being of short height, I came across an interesting article on why the Dutch are significantly taller than everyone else.
The Dutch gained 8 inches in height in the last 150 years, which is a staggering number. In comparison, Americans have not even gained 2 inches in the same time period.

Turns out that nutrition (which sounds like the likely answer) or even genetics are not the main reason. The main reason instead is that taller Dutch men and women comparatively had a lot more children than short ones. Natural selection - or specific cultural preference. The Dutch seem to love height more than any other culture.

To quote: "There seems to be a cultural preference as well. Stulp pointed to figures showing that, in the United States, shorter women and men of average height have the most reproductive success."

Just because there is Soy in the name people are jumping to conclusions without even the minimal research.  :nono:

Soylent is basically oatmeal, fake sugar, fiber, some ground up sprouted brown rice, citrate powder so you don't get scurvy, salt, oil for fats (cod liver oil would be nasty but better for you), and a multivitamin.

http://blog.soylent.me/post/68180382810/soylent-1-0-macronutrient-overview

If humans evolved to survive on liquids we would all look like this:

or - The results of surviving on Soylent for 1 year:

I have heard that a person can survive on ramen for years with no ill effects. A 12 pack of ramen is a little over $2 which is a whole lot cheaper than Soylent.

Yeah. This thread went way off the tracks quickly.

A person can survive on Ramen for years : Probably true. The body can be quite resilient.
....with no ill effects : I question this. Malnutrition would be the first, relatively fast, ill effect. The severity of it would almost certainly progress and eventually lead to illness or a condition. But we're talking about a theorhetic extreme, which is kind of pointless.
