USB switch for high res audio?
« on: 28 Oct 2021, 10:23 pm »
Has anyone tried this (2 dacs to a USB switch, and out to whatever depending on the source)? If so, what was the result, sonically?

Or am I looking for a UBS hub? Maybe a powered hub?

I just picked up 2 DACs: a Denafrips Ares II and a Topping D90 MQA version. The Ares won’t decode Tidal MQA streams. I prefer the presentation of the Ares (more ‘meat on the bones’j but want to switch to the Topping for MQA decoding. I’m going to try a powered USB hub between the Roon Nucleus and the 2 dacs and see what happens . . .

Are you suggesting something like 2 microrendu, 1 for each DAC?

Wonder why because most of the time your PC contains a couple of (internal) hubs.
No need to add an external one.
In fact you can check the devices connected to each internal hub: https://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/SW/Windows/Win7/USBDAC.htm

My first mistake was not accurately stating the problem. I have a Roon nucleus and two DACs, which I want to be able to select depending upon the streaming source I’m using. I forgot that the nucleus has two USB outs, and I can select the DAC that I want from the preamp. What I can’t do at this point is to find my stored high-resolution files on a USB drive attached to my Mac mini. When I go to the storage selections on Roon it allows me to add a network share but does not allow me to browse to find the USB hard drive attached to the mini. Does anyone know how to ‘see’ the network from the Roon software on my iPad? Sorry this was so convoluted.

My guess is it's going to be both difficult and not worth it... as in too much sound degradation.
