I've read through the forum and think I've found the correct replacements for the 2SC3942 transistors, the ones I've bought are the 2SC3503FSTU-ND TRANSISTOR from Digikey.  Are these correct and which way round do they go as I can't find any anywhere in the instructions that tells me which how to fit them?

Yes, metal tab mounts to heat sink.
