is a simple dipole possible?

hi

Is a simple dipole possible?
a very basic question , i know.

if i use a woofer box, standard design for 100hz and lower but want my Focal Audiom 7m midrange to take over from 100 hz in dipole fashion,
what is the formula for the baffle dimensions?  halve wavelength from side to side?
more or less this question is answered now by the figure in my next post

kyrill

hi

I found this image at http://melhuish.org/audio/baffle.html from Sound Practices

so i hope that my "story" of halve wavelengths is wrong and this figure is right?

so how is the formula?

Quarter-wavelength = baffle diameter would fit. But I can`t tell you why.
By the way: Here would be a nice special offer for a W-dipole sub:

thx el`ol

Back to my "simple dipole" question

will it sound "awful" if  only the midrange (100hz-2khz) is a dipole?
I thought dipoles would be simple to build but the more i read about it the more complex it is.

kyrill,

It will sound gorgeous. Look at the designs by GR-Research and Nomad Audio here in AudioCircle.
I have done a quick sketch proposal for a baffle in the Edge:

It is hard to see dimensions: 45 cm wide and 45/55 cm high, element center at 30/35 cm.
This will fit your bill down to 150-200 Hz without need for boosting the Focal.

Having built a number of open baffle speakers to date, I would say this about complexity - you can make it as complicated as you like, as you seek to optimize the design.

But for simplicity, cut a board, cut a hole, and listen.

Then play with wings, or extensions of cardboard with duct tape, and listen.

Then cut a baffle that matches what you like the sound of.  Period.

Works for me, anyway!
