Dakota Staton- The Late Late Show

I can't remember whether it was Neobop or JimG that was talking about this, but I found a copy and got it. This gal has got IT.

Re Dakota Staton-  A great album from the day (around 1960, I think).  I'm pretty sure Neo owns a copy or has owned one.  And, now, you do, too.  Lovely, huh?

Always love to know your experience, thanks for sharing Jim.
I've Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers at Keystone 3 album and it's very nice, now listening.

Thank you for saying that, Asimov.  There are other guys here, and ladies, who have attended lots of concerts and will sometimes post about one or another.  Mjosef, for example, lives in Brooklyn, NY, and frequents clubs in his area and concerts, too, but only rarely posts about them.  I wish he and others would post about them ALL.  My daughter and I were in NYC in December after 9/11 for her 21st birthday and caught pianist Renee Rosnes with a quintet with Chris Potter at Small's nightclub in Greenwich Village and we posted about it.  BTW, Small's has a record label online that puts out some good NYC jazz.

Like you, Asimov, I would like to hear more from our fellow jazz lovers here.  Come on. fellas, it doesn't have to be recent or with recognizable names.  Just post the thing with your comments and that would be much appreciated by guys like me and our young friend from Bangla Desh.  MUCH appreciated.  Thanks.

First off, here's the album for reference on grooveshark, start with 'The Tango King`(track 5).

There's a select list of artists in the world at any given moment whose music is simply unto them, and unmistakable in any context as theirs. Billie Holiday, Coltrane, Miles, The Who, The Dead, a few popular ones come to mind.

Bruce Hornsby is on that list, in my recently formed opinion.

I was in junior high school or thereabouts when he had his hits, 'The Way It Is' and 'Mandolin Rain', and  although I have always really liked them, it probably wasn't edgy enough for me at the time for me to have sought out more Bruce Hornsby - I was more of a Metallica, Led Zeppelin & Guns 'N Roses guy at 13  :D Bought this CD used from an ACer (sonictxt ftw!), and had mild expectations...

Blown away.

This isn't jazz, strictly, and it's actually tough to define exactly what it is- basically it's Bruce Hornsby (see paragraph one). Bluesy, bluegrassy, jazzy, poppy, soulful, intellectual, all of that certainly, but also simply Hornsby playing with some super bad-asses - Jimmy Haslip on bass, Pat Metheny, Jerry Garcia (last track ever recorded, sadly), and Bela Fleck- on what I consider a classic sophomore effort.

Bruce,

Belated congratulations on this one work.

Love,

The Future

Check this wiki, very interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_House_(Bruce_Hornsby_Album)
