Bill Evans -Turn Out the Stars: Final Village Vanguard Recordings

Bill Evans Trio: Bill Evans (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Joe LaBarbera (drums).

Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York from June 4-6 & 8, 1980.

Product Reviews:

Down Beat (2/97, p.54) - 4.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...One of the persistent cliches about Evans is that he was an `introspective' player. But...these sets reveal him to be an expressive, outgoing swinger....[TURN OUT THE STARS is] a treasure, exposing a robust and exuberant Evans who has multiplied his virtues by geometric proportions..."

Musician (3/97, pp.91-93) - "...The pianist was plainly inspired in his last days by the smooth drive of LaBarbera and the throaty, electrifying accompaniment of Johnson....Few jazz artists ever left behind such an exciting and definitive testament as Evans did with these searching, cataclysmic sides."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.91) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is playing is magnificently mesmerising throughout. A must-have for Evans aficionados."

Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin - The Cat

Personnel: Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Steve Nelson (vibraphone); Michael Weiss (piano); Dennis Irwin (bass); Kenny Washington (drums).

Recorded on October 26, 28 & 29, 1990.

New York Times (Publisher) (1/1/92) - "Usually found in a quartet setting, Griffin here works with a group of horns. The album, which had jazz critics writhing in pleasure, is lade with a Blue Note-styled classicism, elegant and informed by the blues."
