thought someone may know the solution. When I try and run windows update (XP) it just sits on the IE screen that says it is checking the ActiveX file then nothing. I can't see my update history , to the left, as it is greyed out. Any suggestions welcome

Here are a few suggestions that come to mind, ranging from fast and easy to time consuming.

Fix #1 - Shut down and restart your computer then try Windows Update again.

Fix #3 - Use System Restore to roll windows back to an earlier date when everything worked.

thank you for the tips. The system restore worked. It reloaded some DLL files.
I noticed when I ran Update it came back and said three dll files were "valid" so it fixed them
