Does your gear make you want to cry tears of Joy?
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 02:23 pm »
Was listening to Ultravox 2009 Concert dvd last night. Then the song 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes' plays and it sounded so good. Followed by 'Kingdom Come' and then 'The Voice'. I wanted to cry tears of joy I was so happy.

Mind you 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes' alone can make men cry. I noticed my friends eyes water up hearing that song. 8)

Close to it at least.  I had a friend over last night listening to the secondary basement system and the main system.  He is not an audiophile but a music lover and will probably want me to help him set-up a combined HT/audio system down the road.  He has been over before but is always amazed when I tell him just two channels are playing as he is the type that will listen to multi-channel stereo at home.  He checked the speakers a couple of times in disbelief that he was just listening to 2-channel audio.

Yeah, especially during the moments i re-discover my old CD/LPs on new and much better equiptments.

For example, the Brahms piano trios by Starker ,Katchen & Suk ,  Elisabeth Schwarzkopf & Christa Ludwig's >Cosi Fan Tutte (1962)<, Elgar's Cello concerto by Du Pre and many, many others . Those superb recordings represents an golden age and the brightest of the sparks casted by the greatest of the artists which i just didn't had the chance to actually see, experience and listen to . Sad, but thank god there's the equiptments and recordings . Ah the music, great music!

I would chime in saying the gear allows some MUSIC which is particulary beautiful (and brings goosebumps, or sometimes tears) to be even more so. Most of the music I find which does that to me is just as moving in lesser systems.
So I would chalk it up to the MUSIC, and not the equipment. 100%
On the other hand, normal music, which i enjoy, can and does sound more interesting with a better system.
And yes, even the moving stuff sounds better on a good system.

It doesn't do that.  Although a great performance will give me goosebumps.

For reasons I'd rather not get into......It was buy them now or never.
I just need to bust my tail to get myself into a better situation to enjoy the music/gear I love/have.

Question, would you cry tears of joy and proclaim 'this sounds so good!' if you heard the same performance live?
Answer: probably not.

Well if that's true than it's indicative of all gear, not just Bryston.
Plus have you seen what it costs to hire your fav bands these days, alot more than our precious systems we enjoy.
There has to be a balanced view in any endeavor. In an audiophile's case it's trying to get as close as possible to the end goal,
which will vary depending upon the individual.

Exactly. No system I have heard, ever, has been anywhere near a live performance. No mega buck system, no Bryston system, no headphone get up, nothing. A system can sound damn nice and even throw an amazing image, but the recording process, compression, and yes the reproduction destroys whatever 'realness' that existed. So sorry, but that's the damned truth and nobody here who says otherwise is being honest with themselves.

Mag, I confess that after I have bought new gear that makes a difference, and I hear that difference in a beloved piece of music, I do tear up. Part of it is the music, but another part, I think, is the joy of finding what I was looking for.
