which sub to pair with RA8
« on: 22 May 2007, 02:42 am »
I was thinking of building the RA8's. What sub would pair well with these speakers. I was thinking of doing a  left and right sub, but still not sure, depends on price.

thanks,

Build the SD12 single driver per cabinet stereo or you can make a twin SD12 sub.

Or last wait for the new SDX15  15" XBL driver due here this week!
Build a 4cft cabinet for SDX15 tuned to 14hz aa

Thanks, for the info. So what size box are we looking at for the SD12. That 15 sounds tempting but will have to wait to see what it will cost. Never had stereo subs, is it worth it doing two or  is 1 enough.
These are what I was looking at, they have a small footprint.

Is a pair of subs worth doing?
Well that is up to you as far as how the bass reacts in your room as well as the over all quality of bass that is important to you.
Below is some measured in room response in my HT room which is 14X22 which is very well damped walls plus 3 bass traps( one in the opposite front corner and one in each rear corner.

The SD12 single driver is posted first then the twin is posted below.
The single uses a 16" sealed cabinet and the twin SD12 uses a 18" sealed cabinet.
All the tests were done one after the other in the same room the mic from the SMS1 for measurements was positioned at ear level in the middle of the room.

On the SD2 (twin driver) the graphs shows the SD2 with a LT1300 amp with boost and with out boost and last is with the boost on the LT1300 amp plus the auto EQ was activated on the SMS1.

Other than that the SMS1 was used for measurement only as you can see the slider bar at the bottom on the graphs to show if the SMS1 EQ was used or not.

Below is the SD12 in a 16" sealed cabinet with settings of eq and boost on the A400 amp with the cabinet in the front of the room positioned in the middle of the front wall.

Now same settings with the sub positioned in the corner.

Last the twin SD12 sub positioned in the corner of the room.
The twin graphs show the LT1300 amp with the crossover settings of 50hz and 100hz one graph with no boost (6db) and the other same crossover settings with the boost on.

Now both designs are sealed for easy of contruction.

Thanks Al.

So what are the prices for the SD12 and twin 12".
I might be interested in the 15" model you will be releasing.

How does your 12" modle Compare to the SVS sound models.

Thanks

$155.00 US for each driver.
Are you looking for a finished sub or just the driver?
Both driver and finished subs are available on the site.

Not sure how they compare as I have never measured or listened to one of the SVS in my room.

thanks,

We use a ED LT1300 plate amp for the SD2 (twin drivers)
A400 external amp as on our site for the SD1 (single driver)

So with the dual sub set up, are the subs on each side or can you built the box so they are stacked and both front firing.

Thanks.

As I said the twin is in a 18" cube one firing to the front and one on the rear.
You can build this design any larger than the 18" cube the best is 4cft and yes you can stack them one on the other.

Just  had a few miuntes to take a few pictures of the SD1 16" cube (single SD12 driver) the SD2 18" (Twin SD12 drivers) plus the SD1P ported design

Below is the SD1P on the left and the SD1 on the right.

On the left is the SD2 on the right is the SD1

Nothing fancy just plain MDF enough for a few photos for you.

Thanks again Al,

I like the spikes on the SD1 and SD2. Are those rounded or spike ends and will they work on the HT3's
