For years I had a nice Nikon 35mm system with photos piling up in boxes that I (mostly) never looked at.
Finally, I got wise and bought a $90 Fuji point and shoot - 12 mpxl. I've even had a small photo exhibit with photos blown up with high quality 8x10 photos. Unless you really need something to make larger prints or other high resolution need, I wouldn't really worry too much about the size of the sensors.
