Ok. Who has the new 4S?  What do you think?

I've got it. Can't activate it, though. AT&T is overloaded.

You actually got it wrong.  I searched for the word "shortage" and or "delayed", but could not find it.

Verizon is offering upgrades for only $50.  Go and get it.  No lines.

Some will have to wait awhile. see http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/10/12/apple_ups_iphone_4s_build_orders_and_switches_ipad_battery_suppliers.html

I received my iPhone 4S today. A couple of nights ago it was in China, on the 13th. Then it went to Alaska and it became the 12th because of the time zones. Then it went to Kentucky, then Tennessee. This morning at 5am it arrived in Charlotte and was delivered to my house at 2:45 and...put back on the truck since I was not there to sign for it  :o  I was at work and wondering if it had been delivered when I saw to my horror that there would be another delivery attempt Monday. I called UPS and luckily Apple had allowed a pick up option at UPS.

I called for an appointment and they said be ther at 7:30pm. I got ther a little early and it was already a traffic jam. I got lucky and was about the 20th to get their iPhone off the trucks. There were probably about 100 waiting after me.

I activated via phone and iTunes. I set it up as a new phone since my backup was a few months old even though I backed it up last night. And since my contacts and calendar were synced to Outlook I had that to sync with.

It's done except for any apps, music, ringtones, pics, that i will handle later - took about 5 minutes!

For me this is a totally new phone since I had (and still have) the 3GS.

This phone had my phone number, (I had turned off my 3GS phone before activating this one) so it appears that they put my phone number on the phone when it was in China. And since I am sending diagnostic data to Apple, using location services, and using iCloud I will pretty soon be "magnetic ink". I think I can turn off the location sensistive iAds  :nono:

Talked to my friend on the new phone - time to play with Siri

Last night Siri was Epic Fail

Example:

"Call Sue Smith mobile"

3 minutes later - "which phone number do you mean" - presents 3 possible numbers for me to touch for Sue Smith - not the way this is supposed to work!

I tried "Call Sue Smith" It eventually asked which number - I said "mobile' and it brought up Mobile, Alabama!

Then it began saying "I could not connect to the network"

Today it seems to be working more as expected - I was able to say

"Call Sue Smith mobile"

and it worked right away as expected.

The problem with Siri is that it has to use Apple servers in some way - not as magical as one would hope. Also probably it has to learn my voice as all speech recognition software has to. Hopefully it will end up being a nice hands free device that will truly enhance my driving experience, as well as have other nice uses.

I am off to the mall with the second (new) Apple store, to see if they will let me in to get a case for this thing - I think I want a minimalist case, perhaps a transparent bumper, because I like the look and feel of this phone

Definitely worth upgrading from a 3GS.

Siri is working better, and I am learning how to use Siri better. It does complain when it can't get on the network, which is a real pain. Some questions work better than others.

Someone try to get a translation/definition of Durango.

I had planned to stopy by the local Apple store on the way to RMAF, but figured it would be a zoo, but I plan to get one as soon as I can get my hands on one.  I've not had an iPhone yet, so this will be my first, and it looks like it will be worth the wait.

Plan to go with Sprint as my carrier, and it's alsoo looking like we may just nuke our landline in favor of mobiles.

I think I'll also get the 64 gb version as I just picked up an ALO Continental portable vacuum tube headamp and Cricket line out dock cable forit, which sounds fantastic with my Shure SE425 IEMs.

Cool stuff!

Do it!

Me: Siri, I love you.

Siri: I love you too, Joe.

That is worth the price of admission, IMO.  :P

Does anyone know what DAC is and/or how it sounds relative to the 4 and 3GS?  Thanks!

If u already have the iPhone 4 just stick with it. IPhone 4s is just repackaged with upgraded camera, faster dual core, siri, ios5.  Everything except hardware is available for the iPhone 4.  Stick it out till iPhone 5 next year.

Siri is cool but nothing new, android has had voice actions for 2 years now and 3rd party apps that do the whole personal assistant like vlingo, speaktoit etc...

Not much of a game changer as they want u to believe,  wait for iPhone 5.

That's tough - my 3GS is falling apart.  Wonder how long for 5.  So are you saying 4s is the same DAC?

Great analysis, Wendell.

Let me see:

CPU 2x faster
Graphics 7x faster (Google for benchmarks)
Camera vastly improved
Video vastly improved
Antenna significantly improved
World's best AI in smart phone voice recognition

What are the announced features of the iPhone 5 that you're waiting for? Because I haven't seen any announced iPhone 5 features, or any halfway credible rumors on the tech blogs I follow.

You're saying that a phone that comes out next year (presumably) will be better than the phone that is available now? Genius. I bet the Wall Street firms are forming a line at your door for tech market analysis.

Iphone 5 will have some key upgrades for some like larger screen and possibly even replaceable battery.

I read today that the Iphone 4S uses battery moreso than the Iphone4...but it has a larger battery so in the end, I don't know how much of a difference it is. The 4S is a top phone at the time of release, the Iphone 4 stayed at the top for about a year. I don't think the 4S will be able to do that, but could be wrong.

I've had Sprint for a long time and it's fine as a cell phone carrier, but for data....it really depends. I'd look into this highly in your area...I've read that Sprint was getting some complaints of slow internet speeds with their Iphone 4S. Just something to keep in mind. I'm with Sprint for the price, but for data speeds...it's pretty lackluster.
