Choke filtering in Bryston amps?
« on: 11 Oct 2011, 07:52 pm »
Hello,
I have a question for James regarding this choke filtering?  Someone on one of the boards said this was very important and Brystons more powerfull amps 14b and up have this feature.  Can you tell me what is important about this and why doesn't the 4b sst 2 have this feature also?

Thanks,
Dave   :?

this choke filtering?

Where in the amplifier circuitry are you referring to "choke filtering"?

The schematics are available at http://bryston.com/BrystonSite05/BrystonDocs.html

I don't see any inductors in the PS of either amplifier in the SST line, I suspect this is the same in the SST2 line as well.

Hi,

We (Bryston) don’t use specific choke filtering except what is part of the power transformer design.

James, thanks for your response. But was wondering if the 14B has a different transformer design then say the 4B?  You said all of the amplifiers in the line have the same sonic characteristics, so why would a 14b sound different?

Thanks,
Dave

Hopefully not Dave - the amp is always part of a system and assuming the amp is not asked to work beyond it's capabilities the sonic characteristics should be the same.

They use to refer to choke filtering with the 14B/7B on the website. But its been updated since and doesnt show it.

Didn't the "Swedish Mod" for Bryston amps you see referred to periodically involve choke filtration or am I thinking of something else ?

The Audio Advisor product page for the Bryston 7BSST2 mentions a "redesigned output choke", as does the Enjoy the Music April/May 2011 review of the amplifier.

Perhaps you're referring to the Plitron (Torus) transformer technology, as alluded to (pre-release) here?

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=21959.0

I know at least some of the amp lineup now have built-in NBT transformers, the same type used in the external Torus units...
