He was fabulous. Everone should hear Pentangle's "Basket of Light" album. The NYT doesn't mention Paul Simon, who also studied under Jansch. Simon recorded an acoustic solo, "Bert's blues", as a tribute when he was in S&G.

I don't know a whole lot about the man's work on the whole, but this comment I wholly agree with.  I got that album from a friend in college from a pile of LPs the radio station was throwing out.  Great stuff.

Jobs & Jansch on the same day. Man, this week has become a certified bummer.

A real loss of virtuosity. His work with Pentangle, solo, Renbourn, and others were of the highest quality. He will be missed.

This is a wonderful album if you're lucky enough to find one.

I was introduced to the marvels of Bert Jansch in high school by my guitar teacher, who noted, in an apparent effort to pique my interest, that he was Jimmy Page's favorite guitarist. At the time, Jimmy Page was indeed my favorite guitarist. Now, 20 years later, Bert Jansch is.

Nobody has ever played like him - the reckless violence with which he plucked those strings, all his guitars must have cowered in fear. I can't recommend his early albums enough - both before and after Pentangle. A special man from a special place and time, and he knew it. A huge loss.
