I remember when this Circle was established and the fairly lax enforcement of those guidelines over time.  The fact that so few are even aware that there are guidelines speaks volumes.
The idea that there are still those who aren't caught up in the pursuit of "trophy" audio equipment  and  truly interested in great sound for reasonable costs was and is an important principle, at least to me.
I  would not like to see those original guidelines relaxed even though they seem too restricting.  The quality of musical reproduction need not be determined by price strictly.

And it's important to me as well Larry, it's why I volunteered to facilitate the circle.  It's been a battle deciding where to be a price Nazi and where to be lenient.  Foremost the place should be fun and enjoyable to post in, second it should be fun to find very good to excellent products within the pricing guidelines.  So the most strictly enforced are the OP threads, if that's over the top we need to move the thread.  Less emphasis is placed on enforcing price guidelines for individual posts, and a gentle word that, for example, Mapletree Audio Design products are for the most part over the pricing guidelines is enough.

And remember, to be within the rules you only have to make a very weakly supported case that you could put together a musically viable system under $1000-1200 US using the component you're touting.  If we were talking headphones here, you could use a MAD head amp and your 'puter to get there.

Ray: I totally agree. I honestly wasn't sure there would be a noticeable improvement going from the Mapletree to the SAS, because both are highly regarded at their price points, and the SAS wasn't a huge leap in price. As good as the Mapletree was, though, the SAS clearly bests it. I have amazing sound right now and don't plan to change a *thing* about my system anytime soon. Steve is a great guy to deal with and he puts together a fantastic preamp.  :thumb:

So in subsequent responses to the OP, we aren't supposed to discuss anything that is above the price point, even if it's pertinent to the discussion? Just making sure I understand. My list of gear earlier in the thread was to futher the point of "American made products"....I wasn't trying to thwart the forum guidelines.

Here's how I see it, first, no crimes have been committed here so everyone can take a deep breath and exhale.  Secondly, no one's getting yelled at because something they post in reply might go a bit over guidelines, we're here having fun talking about audio products.  However from time to time I may exert a gentle guiding hand suggesting everyone remember it's the C&C circle.  So in your case it's more like good try, but no cigar.  No worries.

P.S. I like the link to hollowstate and bookmarked it for further reading later, thanks.

I see. Thanks for explaining. I was under the misconception that this forum was for individual components that cost under a grand, but I just read the guidelines and see that they are far more strict than that (in terms of prices). I will adjust my recommendations accordingly.

A little late, but better late than never...

HRT iStreamer.  Built in SoCal, $200 for a digital iPod DAC.  Excellent sound for the cash.  It doesn't compete with my Rega DAC, but it shouldn't be able to nor have to compete with a $1k DAC.

My current champ for cheap & cheerful is Mirage speakers, on sale at Vanns online with free shipping!  Designed in Canada (made in China), they have a variety of models and the OMD-5 are in my opinion a stupid-good deal.

I heard Decware was using a board you can buy complete on eBay for $110 in their DAC.

Jolida is American headquartered, Chinese made.

Klipsch were created in Arkansas in the 40's, no based in Indianapolis. Probably made overseas though.

Schiit's DAC looks nice, but I think their name will turn away customers big time.

Have to put in my 2 cents for these:

Class D Audio stuff
Nelson Pass B1 Buffered preamp
Decware Zen and other products

I have all these and built the first two myself, and modified my Zen.    Easy builds and USA made.
