I got these today in a trade. Boy can they image!!!! The tweeter looks like an AM radio speaker, but these things sound fantastic. Great speakers for a cheap (and cheerful) system for someone starting out.

I have these currently powered by my AVA Insight 170 power amp.

 

 

Note the inverted roll on the 6" woofers.....

How would those compare with the little PSBs? 
I had the large Advents back around 1975 or thereabouts.  My male labrador retriever decided that he liked them so much he would make them his - you can guess how...

Don't remember this model. The concave surround was an Advent trademark; it may help with diffraction. It evidently isn't the "foam" kind that always ends up dry-rotting either. Judging by your A25s, these look like they would be between those and the A-10s sizewise. What are those to the right btw?

Oh, and I hope the acoustic suspension design, all but abandoned today, makes a comeback; apart from the crisp, tight bass of the Dyna A-series, I find the bass more natural than ported designs as a rule.

The speakers to the right are Paradigm Studio 40v.3's.

The Advents are 16" X 10" X 6 1/2" deep. They are very well balanced and can produce unexpectedly deep bass, for their size.

I haven't heard PSBs, but right now, the Advents are the best small size speaker I have ever heard.

Does "acoustic suspension" mean something other than "sealed box"? If not, it's not at all abandoned... although the term might be.

Sealed box and acoustic suspension  are one in the same. I prefer them to the ported speakers. Wayner, seems you like those speaker a whole lot more than I like the more recent version I have, the Baby II's.

The sound of a neighbors Advents in college was one of the reasons I am in this hobby to begin with.  Nice find.

Yeah, I haven't ever heard the Baby IIs so I have no reference. I have heard the large Advents, an I like what I hear with them, too.

These speakers are not giant killers that play real loud, like a Cerwin Vega or a JBL, but they do play very accurately, especially at lower volumes.

John, Acoustic Research invented the acoustic suspension (closed box) back in the late 60s. They new that they could get a lower bass response with an enclosed cabinet (and smaller woofer), but that speaker had to have a very just right compliance and low mass. They found the know famous foam surround material and the system worked very well. Unfortunately, the ozone is not friendly to this foam and in almost all cases, the woofer surrounds are simply gone on lots of these vintage speakers.

Other companies followed suite like KLH, (Advent of course), EPI, and many others. The Advent Model 3 uses a rubber surround and it does not deteriorate over time, as the others have.

That is the great danger if you get the itch to buy some of these vintage speakers, especially those without removable grills as a surprise maybe waiting for you, when you discover they have to bass.

I've got a pari of Baby IIs. I'm using them with a Marantz 2250b. I had to replace the woofers (with woofers from Parts Express) but stil have the originals which need new surrounds (the to-do list). The tweeters are original, and we still really like their sound, even in our less than optimal location (atoo close to the rear wall). I have heard bigger Advents from this vintage (1980's) which I didnt like. I can't say they (the Baby IIs)  are so very 'accurate' , but those that love it have to admit there's just something about that 60s,70s,80s "sound" that really seems to engage more than newer equipment. I love my AVA gear into Maggies, but that little Marantz and the Baby IIs spinning some Head East, or smiliar LPs always brings a smile to my face.

Generally true, but "sealed box" speakers can also be of another type of loading called "Infinite Baffle". The difference is Infinite Baffle speakers (Bozak being a well-known example) tend to be very large and do not depend on the air pressure in the cabinet to help regulate the speaker excursion the way Acoustic Suspension designs do.
