airplay stops (since iTunes-update?) or is it Lion
« on: 11 Sep 2011, 10:43 am »
Hi All,

Driving me crazy, and surfing the web, also a lot of other people, but I found no topic on this forum yet so here goes:

I used to be able to stream my iTunes library through Airplay faultlessly either through an Airport Express, digitally connected to my BDA1 (or even through an analog connection into my pre-amp) or directly to my Airplay-enabled Marantz Na7004. No dropouts, no tsjirps or any other problem. Controlled from my Macbook, iPad and iPods.

Lately Airplay stops after playing for about a minute, sometimes 2, when streamed to the Marantz, the connection in my Airport Express seems stable as ever. (All solutions I read on the web have to do with settings in the AE and even Ipv6, but thats no going to be the solution in my case obviously).

When I restart Itunes, it finds the Marantz again, I can play for 1 minute again, and hoppa, it's gone.

I use the Marantz for all streaming stuff, and everything works fine. I can connect to it with its web browser interface on the Macbook, and with Wizz-app on iPad or iPod. Internet-radio works wonders. It finds all my dnla drives. Works perfectly. That tells me that my (network-)hardware is all in order, all connections are fine, and something else has to be the culprit. Something that changed lately....

Might it be an Updated iTunes (I already reinstalled, to no avail), Lion (hope not), or the Marantz?

I do have several devices connected to the same Airplay at the dame time, but have been doing that from the beginning without any problem, or when ever a problem occurred it was fed back. ("another devices is using this connection") Nothing of the sort right now. Airplay just stops, and no reconnecting is possible without restarting iTunes.

Please, anyone?

really sounds great namely, and I do miss this possibility.
(luckily I have the BDP-1 to fall back to....JamesTanner is right in not trusting this streaming-business....)

Greetings,
Marius

just noticed on my daughters iMac's they can see the Marantz, and I can't.....how's that possible? going to try and stream from there, and let you know later. Can I control somehow how this sharing is organized?

in discussion with the Marantz helpdesk, they suggested it to be a router related problem. Bonjour protocol not correctly passed through it.

I find it hard to believe, since it worked flawlessly before. `then again, I searched the internet and found a relevant suggestion about Enable Multicast Streams . I did enable it om my DIR855, but no change: Na7004 talks with airplay, but stops after a minute or 2. Either streaming from my macbook, or controlled through the remote-app, or streaming music on the iPad/Ipod directly using airplay.

No matter which wireless-network I select. My main router's, or any of my wired Airports Express's made wireless networks.

Anyone please with more suggestions?
Thanks,
Marius

Update router and airport express software

One possible solution would be to upgrade your router and airport express software.  I am running an airport extreme as my wireless router and an express at my receiver end.  I upgraded to Lion and upgraded the software on both airports.  Occasionally a dropout but I think that is wifi interference.  Otherwise, works fine for me.  Good luck.

Thanks,

I can not find any updates though, I seem to be up to date....
doesn't the airport utility do this automatically?

On the other hand, streaming through an Airport Express works just perfectly. It's streaming to the Na7004 having the problem.

I don't know. I have the latest firmware update, but Marantz refuses to tell what the firmware updates do. Out of protection of the customers against a technical info-overload. Not joking here.

I am in rather an intense communication with Marantz. But I honestly believe it is an error on  Apple's side: just google in Airply looses connection and you know why.

If you have a link for Airport updates I'd be grateful. Or other tips/suggestions for that matter.

Thanks,
Marius

quest-update:

I just tested Airplay hardwired to check whether my wireless network is the culprit. To be certain, I disabled Wifi network. Again the same sequence happened. iTunes can play for a minute or 2 and then stops. Same happened playing from other iMacs on the network to the Marantz on Airplay.

Apparently it has nothing to do with the wireless settings, so I can rule out router-problems on this one.

Leaves me with wired-network problems, or something else?

Thanks,
Marius

Sounds like a Marantz problem if you don't have any issues with AE or ATVs.

Yep,
But Marantz tells me I have to try another router. I did and with no success.

Somewhere along the last months Apple have updated iTunes and went over to Lion, and Marantz had another firmware update. Up to the customers to find out whats wrong...I am not very pleased...

Update:
Source of Airplay-problems found! It was another networked machine. I found out because it was listed twice in my router-settings, and one of the addresses was listed under reserved addresses, while in its own settings is configured as DHCP.

After unpowering the machine and rebooting the router, to re-read network-machines, the reserved address is gone, and only one is still listed. Which of course still is peculiar, since it is not powered now. But it restored Airplay-capability again, which was the start of my problems....

Left with another one now though...

Thanks for thinking with me,

Marius

guess that somewhere along the last months (previous post) I also bought another machine.....

Hi,

Trying to figure out why My BDP kills Airplay to the Marantz Na7004 I would like to be able to read network-traffic to those machines. The BDP polls/is polled constantly and I would like to check that traffic.

I can login to the BDP with shh command, but I don't know how to proceed from there. Can you help me with the necessary commands? Or is there some nicer gui on the Mac to do that (check network traffic).

Thanks,
Marius
