There is a distinct difference between Spocks Beard - old and new (after Neil Morse left). I distinctly prefer the original band with Neil in it, but YMMV. The new band seems to be successful, but it just doesn't have the same sound and energy and originality.

If you do like the old sound, and are partial to Flower Kings too, then I recommend checking out Transatlantic. It's a sort of super band.

I kinda put Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, & RPWL, from what I've heard of them in the frillery fru-fur camp of prog rock. Just not quite my thing. I prefer far less keyboard, far more guitar riff, manlier vocals.

Yep, that's what I thought you were lookin' fer.

Boysetsfire? Vocals aren't too bad. Guitar writing is pretty good. Maybe not prog enough for you and they unfortunately have a few too many arena-style anthems. Tomorrow Come Today is my fav album.

Nothingface? Growl + clean vocals. Kick-arse riffage. Their last album Skeletons definitely approached prog in some songs.

Progressive metal department:

Fates Warning "Disconnected" is very, very good. The band's catalog is a bit spotty but this is their best IMO. They added Kevin Moore, who was a big part of Dream Theater's two best albums (Images & Words, Awake) and made a big difference with FW. Kevin also worked on their "A Pleasent Shade of Gray" album. Jim Matheos' guitar, Mark Zonder's drums and Ray Alder's (who I much prefer to James LaBrie) vocals are all first rate.

I lost track of Fates Warning after Perfect Symmetry, unfortunately. Good to hear they're still going strong. Have you checked out OSI? It's Matheos, Moore and a few other great players. I think it's good but not great. Moore does some singing and he's not as strong a singer as a keyboardist.

Their new album (Mankind) the Crafty Ape finally arrived today and has been on repeat since.

Completely and utterly different bodies of work, but always King Crimson. KC have had several distinct periods marked by radical changes of style and personnel.

I never warmed to OSI. It was one of those projects where the whole was less than the sum of the parts.

Moore is a fine keyboardist but also contributed to Dream Theater's songs, which have slipped quite a bit down through the years since he left.

Another favorite is "Liquid Tension Experiment" but that veers more into fusion territory. It's Petrucci, Portnoy and Rudess from Dream Theater with the great Tony Levin on bass. The opener, "Paradigm Shift" will turn a few heads as it opens at full throttle and takes no prisoners for nearly 9 furious minutes.
