Finally got around to DTP's Transcendence. Must say, has some super cool metal elements that gets a grip and keeps hold. Might lack that metal darkness but makes up for it in a "spiritual" sense of fullness and grandeur. Great texture too on the drums. Damn good work.

I'm SOOO thankful for someone pointing out DTP Transcendence...what an album. Definitely a fun and inspiring listen. I can't wait to get this on a decent system!!!

My first taste of DTP live work. Impressive, indeed. Then add vocal Anneke van Giersbergen. A luxurious addition. In total shock not knowing about this band. The beauty and the spirit of this thread works again.

Speaking of Angry Metal Guy, I find their site to be really good for the metal-fi guy. Their records of the month are almost without question worth buying. I found some really good bands I didn't know this year, like Khemmis (not typically a huge fan of doom, but this is an exception), Vektor, King Goat, The Vision Bleak.

If you like Doom, I can't see you not liking Khemmis. That album is their 2nd release, both are on bandcamp.

Khemmis has real promise. Dig the overdriven guitar riffs. Encyclopaedia Metallum's review cited Decibel and called their sound as doom metal Iron Maiden. That's pretty darn close I think. A little more atmosphere and texture change and it's going to be a nice long ride.

Edit: one time through and already it will be a contender for AOTY for me at least. So much love already. These guys know how to write. Paul Masvidal's (Cynic, Death) was a welcome presence. I was listening while working on something so not paying super attention and I was like, that doesn't sound like the lead vocalist's vocals, but sounds very familiar, then it clicked...ah....Cynic!

Mucho appreciado on Persefone's new release. Angry Metal Guy's review drips of perfection and he's gone gaga on this one. I can't agree on all of his reviews but he's usually in the ball park most of the time. Work can't end fast enough.

First listen. Stunningly agile. Bordering on a prog masterpiece. On the board too for AOTY. Switched from 2.2C speaker to headphones. Turns out to be a good call... it allows to extract way more production elements. This is good stuff my friend.

If you aren't already familiar with their back catalogue, they have 3 other albums. The last one prior, Spiritual Migration, is on the same level. Shin Ken before that is really good and experiments heavily with asian instruments.

Yesterday, Wolfheart released their new album through Madsupply.com. I gave it a once through at it is definitely on par with everything else Tuomas has done. Highly recommended checking it out if you like melodic death (lighter side of melodeath).

I haven't heard anything done by Tuomas Saukkonen I haven't liked. Before The Dawn albums are exceptional. He just can't sit still... now his latest, Wolfheart.

BTD "The Ghost" for me stands out.

BTW, 2nd time through for Persefone's Aathma. Most impressive new release I've heard since Draconian's Sovran (2015).

I don't own that one. I don't own any of the first 3 albums as Nuclear Blast doesn't sell them anymore and the only places I could find them they are hundreds of dollars. I might have to torrent them. I don't normally download albums without paying for them if I can, but in their case I don't really have a decent option.

Another great Doom metal album is Ordos - House of the Dead. Its a bit harder/darker than Khemmis, including some harsher vocals (not outright growls though).

Ok, here is an unusual recommendation from me, as I typically don't really dig black metal on the whole (some exceptions). This band is "cosmic black metal". It has a symphonic element to it and is spacey, electro at times, but definitely the black metal vocals. And it has a DR of 11! That means it is highly dynamic, not compressed to hell. It is 1 20 minute EP but costs $1.
