are sansui tuners any good-
a guy will trade a pair of my def tech bp6 speakers for a 70's sansui tuner in great shape.
speakers arent worth much more than 100 bucks or so-i paid 350 for them over 8 years ago-

should i do it-
any models worth more than others -

Yes, 70's Sansui tuners can be very good. What model is he offering you. The 717 & 719 are both very nice. The T60's & T80's are good tuners but not worth as much. Check out www.antennaperformance.com. These people do wonderful things with 70's analog tuners. I have one of there modified Realistic tuners, might be the best tuner I've ever owned. It stays in my big rig while my $500 Rotel tuner stays in the bedroom system. Analog tuners from the 70's are the way to go.

he couldnt remember the  number, its a personal unit of the sales guy at the local high end store.

i said i was looking for a vintage analog tuner with big knobs and such like my step dads old sony, he said he had one he hadnt used in years he would sell me for 100$, so i asked if he would swap for my def tech speakers that were purchased from that store years ago.
he is bringing it in tomorrow

yes, the fmtunerinfo.com site is excellent.  of course, as a contributor, i am biased!  

many of the sansui's are wery nice.  my recently acquired tu-719 is really sweet, & an ergonomic pleasure, w/its digital readout, even tho it's an analog tuna.  but, the sansui's are now appreciating rapidly, as folk discover their amazing sonics & sensitivity.  and, they're real lookers.  so, tho a bargain when compared to what is awailable new, they're spendy when compared w/other lesser-known classic tuna.  ie: i like my philips 185 a tad better than my sansui, & i only paid $26 for it.  and, my ~$30 technics st-8600 is about the equal of my sansui.

if ya like the sansui look, and wanna save a few dollars, go for a tu-517 - yust like the 717, except for one useless feature, which i forget.  and, it's not quite as well-known, or appreciated.  i wouldn't trade one of these sansui's for a md-108, unless, of course, i could immediately sell it & buy something else!  

i am curious as to what yer friend has f/s for $100.  some lucky fmtunerinfo guy picked up a sansui tu-x1 at a yard sale for <$100, & these now bring ~$2k on ebay.     these *are* outstanding beasts, tho i'm not sure they're worth that premium...

ps - merle - which rotel do ya have?  surely not one of the older classics - the rt-1024 is supposed to be really nice, & the rt-2100 is supposed to be exceptional.  i have an rt-2100 coming next week...

You need to know which Sansui it is. You can e-mail antennaperformance.com and ask about the individual model. The fmtunerinfo.com site has average prices and is updated yearly or even more often to give you an idea of value.

The main problem with the tuners is whether it will need an alignment after all these years. The fmtuner guys are into mods and you can send you tuner in to antennaperformance or some of the other guys at the site to have it looked at. You can really get into trouble if someone has cracked the case and messed around in there; apparently there are a bunch of guys who do mods who don't know what they're doing.

I bought a modded Magnum FT101 from antennaperformance but don't have my roof antenna up yet (still remodeling). I did seriously consider the 717 Sansui, they do look great. From what I remember the 719 has a locked tuning feature that defeats some of the manual knob turning, but this feature can be defeated by someone who knows how.

You can also go to yahoo groups, fmtuners is the group, either do a search or join and ask your questions. They are an excellent bunch of guys!

You may have to figure out what you'll tell your friends when the ask, "why don't you just get XM?"

the speakers arent doing a thing and wont anytime soon because i cant stand them(very bright - unlike me) , so i will probably make the trade today no matter what the reciever # is.
the black ones are very very nice looking it would be nice if its one of them.

The scarce TU-317 appears to be the same tuner as the TU-217 with the exception of an additional switch labeled “Noise Canceller” and a lighted tuning dial. They look almost identical cosmetically and have basically the same circuitry. Like the TU-217, the TU-317 is easy to modify for even better sound quality (the toughest part is finding one). The TU-317 has 3 gangs and 2 filters and should sell for $50-100 on eBay, but one TU-317 inexplicably sold for $177 in 3/02 and one with rack mount handles went for $182 in 7/02. [JR]

been listening to this all day-i think its broken in -lol
anywho i am so happy  with this bugger a buddy just left, when he saw it he said "kool retro look " he thought it was new, when i told him it was made in 78 he looked at me like i should call for a rubber room and straight jacket-then i fired it up(shut off mute on reciever) and tuned in wour in utica-very hard to get in our area-came in very clear and clean when the “Noise Canceller”is engaged.he was here for a hour and was late for diner.

as good as this picks up hard stations its so dam sweet with the easy stuff to pick up-the local stuff sounds like a cd -has image and depth-

i guess ill be on the look out at garage sales and flee-ce markets for the better sansui's
