The VR77 was supposed to have graced the 2010 RMAF but due to some problems with the gloss finish cracking they didn't bring it.  This year VSA will be bringing the VR5 Anniversary Mk2 paired with Purity Audio amplifiers.  If you haven't heard the Annies you really need to.  They are one heckuva speaker and from what I gather, those Purity amps are very good as well.

Just a minor clarification.  I believe the VR5s will be mated with some new and improved McAlister amps, with the Purity Audio Design pre-amp in the mix.  Should be a fun combo.

I don't want to pirate this thread but did want to clarify the comments regarding the show.

KJ is correct. The VR-5 Annies will be this year's VR speakers at RMAF. At this time, it is planned to have the McAlister 195 OTL mono blocs being fed by the Purity Audio Design Ultra GT with the pure silver autoformer upgrade.

We have been talking with Albert in getting everything put together

Other than the Integrated Hybrid, Purity has not yet released any amplifiers.

Now back to the regular scheduled prpogram......those amazing VR-7s

I was really hoping if albert would use one of his reference grade passive speaker system in one of the audio shows.......was the vr 7se the pinnacle of albert's passive  speaker design?........is there any signature limited edition available for the sevens....or is the program totally shelved.

The 77 project has been put on the back burner for now because of the current economic conditions  :( There is a chance that when they do finally come out, they might be semi-active as well.

Europe, Asia and the Middle East are making up most of the premium line sales and homes in these areas can't fit really large speakers for the most part. Those that can end up with the semi-active models. The U3s and Annies are the perfect fits for the most part.

Also on the back burner is the semi-active VR-100 project that is supposed to slot in between the 9s and 11s.

So yeah, that leaves the 7s as the big dog of VSA passives for now unless the 100 comes out in fully passive form.

hey violet...

I pulled the VR5s well out from the front wall and lost a lot of my bass.  The Velodynes have provided a great seamless low end.

I have my VR5-Anniversaries set up 48" from the back wall to the back of the speaker.  The bass is very deep (especially if you make sure to set the absolute phase correctly for whatever recording you're using).  On recordings that actually have deep bass, it is striking.  If you're listening to classical, try London/Decca, Chandos, Hyperion.  Phillips, DG, Naxos... don't cut it.  The addition of the VSA MB powercables really made the difference driving a pair of Spectron monoblocks-- deep and fast bass.  Deeper than I would have thought possible without subwoofer(s).

Sounds like you've got things dialed in Bob.  With my VR5s about 3.5 ft from the front wall, according to my SPL meter, things dropped like a rock below 50 hz or so...can't remember exactly.  With the subs I am pretty much ruler flat now down to 20 or so and lovin' it.

This is the major question Violetmachan.

The only way to find out is.................

As I know Albert for a long time now, he still is able to improve his designs.
I know Albert for nearly 15 years now and I have seen and over all heard a lot of speakers designed by Albert and made by Von Schweikert Research at first and later Von Schweikert Audio. I can confirm that every upgrade Albert discovered in his original design made his speakers sing even more than before.

As a recording engineer for more than 40 years now I may say I have quite a lot of experience with the original performence of live music, the recording of this and the play-back of the same music. We choose the VR 4 gen II at that time due to the realism we heard in the music we recorded. Later we used the VR 7 SE called "the Vast" or nicknamed "Darth Vader" since they were able to use for big orchestral recording play back at realistic level.

I know the big brother VR 11 SE since I calibrated this system a while ago and was shocked by the realism they give.
They also scared me while watching a 'thrilling' movie. Albert should write some 'warning-lines' about this in the manual. Beware of 'fear-reflex' due to the realism.

So I guess the VR 9 SE mk II will be stunning.

Let's wait and see (hear)

Hi ceedee
I do second the performance of the vr 7se with large orchestral music.....very impressive.....with fabulous low frequency resolution. I was listening to one of albert's show demo disc nos 17 yesterday.....was astonished at the lalo schifrin piece ....with tons of low frequency activity .....like waves of subterranean shock waves with magical definition ......
I never lost hope in vr 7se in my so called very lively living room( most common inference by most hifi dealers i have dealt with in the past)  but all of a sudden with the introduction of  the matched tenor pre amps with the tenor 350m monoblock power amps......by god.....it just sings and sings.
It is very special to have albert and team do customised home installation for his reference grade speaker owners.......imagine having speakers customised to your room!!......well done for  chief ewok and Manila .
Ceedee do you still have your 7se.....have you had any upgrades done by albert?.......is he planning to visit holland/ Europe .
I presume my concept of being totally passive !!ie. Speakers with good amplification is an outdated one ......irrespective of room size......fortunate for me.....finally it seems to works like a musical dream.....the magic of the tenors brings the 7se to life!!
Cheers from passive violet

Cheeseboy

Violet,

Those are bitchen looking preamps/amps.  I'm sure they sound as good or better than they look.

Congradulations.

Not to change the subject but an interesting application of your artwork might be using your existing works to be used in printing on the cloth covering over room treatments.  Two of them would work very well in our listening room.

Very nicely done!

violetmachan

Cheese boy
Most of the artwork are mounted on acoustic panels.......happy to try some screen printing.....if the price is right.....?people claim the 70% room acoustics and 30% is the speaker and the system......for me the room even with the subtle treatments.....was always the lively one......but with the tenor preamps.....the listening does not seem to distract from the music anymore.....the tenor 350m and preamps in my setup seems to be the magic....I have lived with reference Mark levinson's in the past...lamm and also had the dartzeels on extended home demos ......all in the so called lively living space......And have struggled to control the vr  7se in the past.......I think the real beast is the tenor combo
Passionate on being passive....ie only on speaker terms

Hello 'passive' Violet,

Nice name, to be active in a passive way.

We sold the VR 7 SE a while ago since we moved our studio to a smaller building. Now I use the Unifield III in the masterering room of course driven by the Kronzilla. So I stay passive too for the moment. :thumb:

Hello cor
Sad to hear you have sold your vr 7se.....have heard the kronzilla mono blocks with a reference Wilson bencsh ? Speakers......must say mighty fine czech tube amps.....
Cor if you do get a chance to the listen to the tenor 350m/ preamp line1 + power 1 hybrid combo.....Well has a warpspeed of light with a sudden impact effect of a tsunami with a finnesse of 50 year old single malt with a softness of an infant's bottom!!!.....does it sound like music....oooh  yeah!!!!!....... The best i have heard for passive speaker systems....

Remember an old Sufi saying" paradise is all in the mind".......can change in a instant....And to make it worse my hearing can be getting old!!.....said to decline once you reach 40.

Cor .....I have no financial interests in tenor, nor I am remotely associated with the audio trade ......just a passive audio dipstick....as my wife likes to infer
Passively active .....violet ,strictly in speakers terms only......this was to brighten up a boring bank holiday in UK
