Kelly's Heroes
« on: 31 Jul 2011, 12:40 am »
The Military Channel is playing Kelly's Heroes all month as if this movie is a classic.  I have always considered the movie to be rather stupid and unbelievable - almost a spoof.  As an example, Donald Sutherland plays a hippy tank driver funny thing is - WWII was 2 decades prior to hippies.

As a guy who enjoys WWII movies and such, I find Kelly's Heroes to be poorly scripted and really poorly casted.

Any fans of Kelly Heroe's?

Grande POS. Every time I see this movie I end up cheering for the Germans...
At least on TV its free. I rented it once and it made my DVD player gag.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

I've always loved this movie  - it's not really a WWII movie any more than Slaughterhouse Five was, or MASH was a Korean War movie.

It is a comedy/heist movie set during WWII.

With all due respect, I strongly disagree. This movie is a classic and the cast is awesome. OK, it may be a little light hearted but at least it's entertaining and doesn't go out of its way to make a "deep" social/political statement. Too bad "Three Kings" (or whatever that clooney movie was) wasn't as entertaining.
Also, how many WWII movies have you seen that have real Tiger tanks. Yes sir, those are real Tiger's.

From Wikipedia -

"The three Tiger I Tanks used in the film were actually ex-Soviet Army T-34 tanks, converted in great detail by specialists of the Yugoslav army for the 1969 movie The Battle of Neretva."

Still some of the coolest tanks in any movie I've seen.

You guys take movies way too seriously. Not everything has to have subtitles and have some deep underlying, life changing message. Sometimes Judge Dread or Commando is a perfect way to turn your brain off for 90 minutes.

Well, I stand corrected.  :thumb: I learned something new today and that's cool. By far the best Tiger tank replicas I've ever seen. I've spent the past 20 yrs believing that those were real Tigers...but this newfound knowledge doesn't change how much I enjoy this movie. Now I'd like to see The Battle of Neretva.

On a side note, if you ever find yourself near Baltimore, the Aberdeen proving grounds has a outstanding "outside" museum with all sorts of historical tanks and assorted field pieces. Sits out in the open and you can climb all over the stuff. Its a ton of fun if you enjoy military hardware.

I'm with you Bob.  It's not Oscar material, but it wasn't meant to be.  Good, fun movie that I've seen many times.

Good to know that someone likes this movie.

I just fail to see the humor, and casting Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland, Telly Sevalas, Carroll O'Connor and Clint Eastwood in the same movie just strikes me as bazaar.  Maybe that is where the comedy comes in?

Ya know, I feel the same way about most Ben Stiller movies. Just don't get 'em. I guess that's why it's called personal taste.

Agreed on Ben Stiller, and he gets old quick.  He is not nearly as funny as your Avatar!  I just noticed that for the first time and got a good chuckle. Meeee F'n oooow

I remember being dropped off at the Chinese theater by my friends dad and then calling him to let us see it again. Loved the movie. A bit hokey and over the top but great for its time. I remember reading some many years later that it was made to boost the war effort while we were in Viet Nam so that explains the across the board casting and the light heartedness of the script.

I am a fan of war movies, and I've just watched Kelly's Heroes on the Military Channel.  I think it is a real stinker, kind of a 2-bit version of The Dirty Dozen (a classic IMO) mixed in with Cheech and Chong.  I love most of Eastwood's work, but his range in Kelly's Heroes was, uh, from 1 to 2 on a scale of 10.   Don Rickles?  Love him, but he was just channeling Phil Silvers as Sgt Bilko.

M*A*S*H*?  While not particularly believable, I suspect it is a good telling of military life away from the battlefield, but it had the balls to deal with issues.  Kelly's Heroes was more like (It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World in uniform.

I had not seen Ryan's War until a few weeks ago.  An absolute stunner!  Tremendous acting from all involved and beautifully shot.

Just my take on it, so fire away!   :flame:
