Von Gaylord Audio - Tell Us Your Experiences.
« on: 22 Jul 2011, 05:35 pm »

Hi there:

Have any of you folks bought, or auditioned Von Gaylord tube gear or speakers? Would like to know where they sit in the high end audio pile.

Thanks,

At the recent California Audio Show, the Von Gaylord room was exceptional.  I like high efficiency speakers and low power amps, and the Von Gaylord speakers are difficult to drive presenting a 4 ohm nominal load I think, but yes, they were very, very good.

If I were in the market shopping for a pair of Magico speakers, I might think the Von Gaylord speakers at less than half the price would be a suitable bargain.

Thanks Wils for sharing.

If you were to guess at the sonic signature of the tube amps used, probably the Uni Earth 180 watt monos, what would you say?

Clean and clear. Or, has a sweet golden glow. Laid back or very fast and alive? Images like a set or push pull? Etc.

Thanks

It's hard for me to have a definitive opinion with a system that I'm not very familiar with, with music that I'm not very familiar with, and without a lot of time.

Having said that:

Clean and clear.
Slight warmth.
Great presence.
Neither laid back nor very fast and alive.  In between.
In between a push-pull and a low power SET.

My impression was a of great all arounder that does nothing wrong but was quite musical and convincing, detailed, clear and open, without fatigue and had particularly strong presence.

In general, I try to stick to high efficiency, easy to drive speakers and low power amplifiers, perhaps even flea power amplifiers.  So Von Gaylord would be a departure, but if I were in the market today for a wholesale change, I would very much be open to a Von Gaylord system.

Also, given my unfamiliarity with high power tube amplifiers for difficult to drive speakers, I would likely pick both the speakers and the amplifiers to bias in favor of likely synergy.

It was a good room.

Excellent write up. Thanks a lot, very helpful.

So, anyone else? This brand can't be that far in the woods.

Hi,

I have an entire Von Gaylord system. New return of the legend speakers, LAD 2 Sig pre, Nirvana monoblocks, all Von Gaylord chinchilla cabling, Von Gaylord power conditioner, Soundsmith SG200, Spiral Groove SG 2, and Triplanar. The systems sounds pretty amazing. You can pm if you have specific questions.
