I use the SMS-1 for bass EQ (crossed over at 80Hz) with a single JL F112. The SMS-1 works well with our HT2TL's and am very happy with the results. I don't get the sense that our bass is localized. It would nice to add a second sub, but I don't feel like it is something that I absolutely need to do. We do have bass traps in all four corners of our room - that makes a big difference.

I was wondering what you guys are crossing your HT2-TLs at with your sub?  I hope to get my pair in a couple of weeks and will be crossing it over with a JL F112 (or F113 if I decide to upgrade).

It's really going to vary depending on your room, setup, speakers/sub, etc.  You will have to experiment to see what works for you.  As mentioned, 80hz is a good starting point.

In my setup I'm using an SVS sub with my HT2-TLs; low pass set to 80hz and high pass set to 125hz (the gap is required to smooth a room response bump around 100hz).  I have no problems with blending or localization.

Gotcha.  I still say this is due to a poor in-room frequency response.

Do you have any pictures of your room you can post?  How about a description of your room and the locations of your, speakers, sub, and listening position?
thanks for offering for help. my room is a shame to show..... but once i get my ST and move to a new place, ill get more serious with the setting.

Wait a minute: I thought the point of "bass" was to have it coming from everywhere, not just a single location.  Is that what you're talking about, ricardojoa, or does it just sound like it's coming from a specific place other than the front of the sound stage?  Bass should be fully enveloping; it's not directional.  Localization, whether it's by the speakers or coming from anther spot, is bad.  The bass in my room comes from the left, the center, the right...everywhere!  This is the same thing I heard in TJHUB's room the last time I visited.  Is this not what the ultimate goal is?  If not, then I've got work to do.  :o
i think my problem is integration. The bass seems tight from rythmik but it isnt coherant with the fronts. Using front full range seem to have better integration and is easier to integrate.

Low bass seems to come from everywhere, while midbass should absolutely sound like it's coming from the speakers or center stage.  You should not be able to localize any low bass frequencies, ever.

Correct.  I should have been more specific that I was speaking of the ULF bass; the lowest frequencies should be coming from everywhere, while the midbass comes from center stage.

I used to use a Begringer 1124p to EQ, but as of right now I don't need it because my current sub location/room interaction follows the REW 24dB/Ocatve curve nicely without EQ.  I am very fortunate.

I did not realize that the Velodyne SMS-1 has an audio output that applies a high pass filter of 80hz.  This would be an excellent solution if the JL didn't have ARO.

I'm going to contact Marchand and see if they can build me a high pass crossover at 80hz with some good parts.

Doesn't Marchand offer a stock high pass crossover with a 24dB /octave slope?  I could be wrong.  Regardless, that's a great idea, advanced101.  I've heard great things about the quality of Marchand's gear.

Nuance, Yes they offer the 24db slope. Here is the model I was referring to (XM46SB):
http://www.marchandelec.com/xm46.html

I emailed Marchand and asked them what components they used, here was their reply:
"We use high quality parts in the XM46: potcore inductors, polypropylene
capacitors and metal film resitors."

The unit is $250 plus shipping.
I am hoping that I can customize some things on the unit (I am in communication with them).  First, I would like the inputs and outputs on one side of the unit (For wire management).  Also, I would like to use the same internal cabling, resistors and caps as my HT-2TL.  Kimber TCX cabling, Auricaps and Mills resistors.   We will see.

Well here was the reply:

Thank you for your message.
We normally can build with custom components.
But the parts you specify are not compatible with this product.
The 15 gauge wire is too thick and useless here.
We normally use 24 gauge wire, stranded.
The components you specify are good for power level crossovers, in the speakers.
Not for signal level crossovers as these are.
Hope this helps
Sincerely
Phil Marchand

So I ordered the standard unit, and put both the input and output Rcas on one side.  The lead time is in two weeks, which is close to the arrival of the HT2-TLs. I cannot wait.

^ That's awesome, even if it's not exactly what you were after.  I think you'll like their product, though, and I look forward to hearing your impressions about it (them).
