Next step up from 6922EH

Guys,

Just curious on which tube would be a step up from the Russian 6922EH variants. I like nuetral tube that are open with a wide and deep SS. I know the Herron VTSP 3A iss voiced with the 6922EH tubes but just wondering if I can extract more in tube quality. My listening preferance is classical and gospel.

Thanks,
Wig :)

I'm not sure about stage depth, as it seems to be a function of how recessed a tube makes the upper midrange sound (to me anyway), but I really love my 1973 NOS Mazda 7308 tube.  This is the only tube I've heard in my DAC that truly sounds balanced from the bass through the treble.  The treble decay is perfect to my ears and the bass is not bloated in any way.  The midrange has weight, but is not "warm" or "lush".  The tube has fantastic clarity and timbre.  Basically it was night and day "better" than EH I had previously.

I picked it up from Brent Jessee Recording by his recommendation based on my feedback of tubes I've tried and what I was hearing/looking to hear.

Genalex - Gold Lion E88CC / 6922

I replaced my 6922EH tubes with the Gold Lions.  Bested the 6922EH in every area to my ears.  Tubes are in the input stage of my diy Ella power amplifier.  The EH tubes are affordable.

You will have to tube roll just like the rest of us. 8) I will say mid 80's Phillips and Sylvania JAN are some nice tubes. And are fairly plentiful & affordable. :thumb: Then there are the Amperex Bugel Boys.$$$ Save money with the rest of the Amperex family - orange globe, white label, ect, all sound similar. Happy rolling.

Look! http://thetubestore.com/6dj86922types.html has the Phillips and the Sylvanias. Actually I would bet the Phillips and the Sylvanias are from the same factory. They sounded the same in my AVA T8. They are built the same and look at the graphics. The prices on TTS seem a bit high. I would search the web for better deals. The Phillips were available for half what TTS asks, not a year ago.

So you need 6 tubes? :o

Thanks for the info. A tube retailer like both Amperex PQ and Jan Sylvania but noted that the Jans are bright and lean in the midrange. I'm thinking is the Jans really better than the EH6922 that were described as shrill and bright?

A friend of mine is using JJ Gold pins in his pre with good success, so I'll be trying these also.

Thanks,

I second the JJs and use them. The only weakness is they are noisier than Amperex, Russian 6H23n-eb so one cannot use them in Phono circuits. Order low noise and balanced sections. (Russian tube is a little thinner sounding than JJs.)

Cheers.

Rcvd my JJ on Monday, They're pretty good with very good soundstaging, imaging with a rich warm sound but not overly warm. I think that a more neutral/dynamic tube will suite my system better since my solid-state amp is very tube like and I also have a tube player with Avalon Ascendants that are not super detailed.
