Yummy meat: "Taylor Ham" or "Jersey Pork Roll"
« on: 24 Jun 2011, 09:12 pm »
Anybody had this?
I just had my first taste a couple weeks ago. Once "raw", and one on the BBQ grill.
Wow. Can't believe I'd never heard of it.

Taylor's Pork Roll and Thrasher's French Fries were the highlights of our summer trips to Ocean City, Maryland when I was a kid. I could live on that stuff.

Taylor pork roll, otherwise known as Taylor ham is a Jersey breakfast meat staple. You have to get the roll, not the boxed sliced ones.

Nothing better for a Sunday morning breakfast than a fried egg, cheese and Taylor ham on a kaiser roll.  Yummy and damn the cholesterol.

Yes, I bought two (3) pound rolls the other day from that website. They should arrive early next week.  :thumb: :thumb:

As the story goes.....I was on a canoe float trip a couple weeks ago with 18 other guys, all from other states. The guy from Jersey brought the pork roll.
None of us, not a single one, had heard of it. He sliced them up, dropped them on the grill, and served them with BBQ grill toasted hamburger buns.
Ohh maaann.... Heaven.

It was $56 to buy and ship the six pounds to the house. The wife thought I was nuts.
"We can get ham at the grocery store much cheaper", she said.

"Yea, but...."

Bob what ever you do don't listen to her. Pork roll is available from co. like Boar's Head but it's just not the same.
If you have a Shoprite near by buy their store brand. It's very very close try it in a side by side taste test. That is of course
if they carry it...........Bill

B.T.W. Shoprite also carries a spicy porkroll which is muy bueno  :thumb:

Thanks, but we have no Shoprite stores here.  :(

...oh.... and in this particular case, I did indeed NOT listen to her. I did "sell her" on the idea though.
I'll let you know what she thinks after she's tried it.

That's what it was, was a Pork Roll Sandwich. (toasted hamburger buns over the BBQ while the meat was cooking).
We were out in the woods "roughing it", but we did managed to bring the fancy mustard.

I saw Scapple on the website. What is that?

My 2 favorite food groups....Pork Roll & Scrapple!!

There is a place thats near my house that serves up 2 great breakfast sandwhiches:

1) Fat Oscar - Double Pork Roll W / Bacon, Cheese, 1 Fried Egg  and
Fried Onions

2) Petey's Belly Buster - Large Kaiser, Bagel or Croissant, 2 Eggs, Cheese, Hash Brown, with or without Onions, and your choice of meat (Mine is always with fried onions and Scrapple!!)

Definitely not good for you, but in moderation

Just saw some Google pictures of Scrapple.  :? Not the best looking thing in the world, but I'd try a piece.

Ton, those sandwiches sound good. The Fat Oscar sounds awesome!

Scrapple is a mixture of the "scraps" left over when butcheing up a pig, minced up and mixed with flour and spices, and it is cooked in a loaf pan. It is usually gray in color.

You can slice it and pan fry it. Some diners will deep fry it to give it a crusty outside, while the center is kind of hot and soft.

Tastes kind of like liver/bacon and some peppery spices.

Its a PA Dutch thing. Once you are outside of this location, its usually hard to come by.

Taylor ham is Jersey. Scrapple is SE Pennsylvania. Both are Sunday staples in my household.

Scrapple is best, IMO, when thin cut, floured, and deep fried.

Ever hear of a manburger? Mix your ground beef with ketchup, mustard, bacon, salt, pepper, and chopped shallots/scallions. Cook the burger. Top with cheese, Taylor ham, sunny side up fried egg, and scrapple.

Almost better than sex.

Wow!  :o
That sounds amazing.
Although, I think I'd need to be cleared by a doctor before consuming that.

Ok.....quick question for you "Jersery Pork Roll Pros"......

Today I get two 3# "rolls" in the mail. Nice.  8)
I suppose I can freeze an unwrapped roll without a problem?

Also, after I cut into a roll and leave it in the fridge, how long can I keep it in there?
Days, weeks, months?

Thanks fellas,
Bob

You can find scrapple in a lot of Maryland.
