lady Gaga Rip

HI all,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I couldn't find a more appropriate one.

I'm just entering the Hirez music world and in testing my new hardware, Bryston's digital duo, ripped Lady Gaga's Born This Way. Being my first real rip , next to all my ALAC files in the Itunes library, in uncompressed Flac format made with Max on the Mac I have a question. Specifically in the songs Americano and Marry the night, her voice sounds really distorted, like the needle of the LP playing the wrong groove...The rest sounds quite alright I must say.
Might be on purpose, but also might be a bad Rip (if so I would have to have a helping hand leading me to the right settings in Max....)

Again,
sorry if this is the wrong forum, but please let me know whether the distortion in intentional or result of my bad ripping qualities...

Thanks,
Marius

Depends what you mean by distortion. There is a lot of processing on her voice, on every track. I think those two tunes you mentioned sound relatively good compared to some of the other tracks which are deliberately mutilated, like ShieBe, and others where she is processed to project through the huge accompaniment. Your two tunes show her voice without a lot of accompaniment so it could be that you are hearing the basic processing that is on all of the tracks more clearly without distraction from big accompaniments. Each song has different effects on her voice.

Try it on 128kbps mp3, you might like it better, that's how it is consumed by 99% of people, including radio, and the recording engineers know this. There could be a different mix on CD, but most CD buyers will compress it anyway, so I would not be surprised if the CD is compensated to achieve the desired sound quality after compression.

I recently purchased Cristina's Exotica and rally disappointed in sound quality. Cristina's voice on the Burlesque sounds really good
I just do not know what the pop music industry is doing these days

I downloaded Elton John and used Max to convert flac.  The songs would randomly skip and delete entire phrases.  I downloaded a program called Switch and it cured my problems.  It has a 14 day free use period.  Try that with your Gaga tracks and see if that helps.

Just curious, is the distortion present when played back from the CD? If so, it's the recording.

;-))

ive got enough other hires recordings, just thought I'd give Lady Gaga a try.

bad choice  i guess...

Marius
have to check the cd, believe it is not that good either. Could be magnificent though when available in hires, other than the odd cd it is available in right now.

btw, why i this moved to the Apple core?  just because I ripped on a Mac?

shouldn't we have a new topic of bad recordings, where everybody can warn the members of bad sound-engineering..

IMHO, Lady Gaga represents everything wrong with the music industry.  It is all about the marketing and the gimmicks.  It would be nice if an artist could make it today w/o stripping on stage.

To keep this post on the topic, I have downloaded a few Lady Gaga MP3s and found that she does sound nice on my rig.

Rightonrighton Pez! She was on SNL (repeat) last week. Awesome performances of 3 songs, one was singing solo behind the piano, she has incredible voice. The other dance numbers were also great. She is very talented, as are a lot of the current pop artists. We are in a resurgence of pop music, I hope it lasts. Maybe record companies finally realized that rap and hip hop is what killed them. Gaga's songs are very derivative, but nobody of that age knows about Madonna, and gaga's voice is much stronger.

Agreed, but do you agree her antics detract from her talents and cause people to not take her seriously?

Yeah, her produced videos sometimes disgust me. She is either twisted or just faking it. I think she is smart enough to fake it. I just try to focus on the voice and ignore the weird lyrics and the videos.
