Perhaps I am alone in this, but I think The Final Cut was the best, followed by Animals and then The Wall. I recently purchased Roger Water's "In the Flesh (Live)" off of iTunes, and then bought the DVD from Amazon for $11 and ripped it to 24-bit, 48kHz lossless, and it sounds quite good. Wish You Were Here is quite good in small doses.

I just tried to listen to Atom Heart Mother on MOG.com and couldn't stand it, and now I am listening to "Obscured by Clouds" and am underwhelmed. Meddle had its moments. Umaguma as I dimmly recall, required a fairly large meal of cardboard-tasting mushrooms. Several Species of Small Furry Animals just really isn't that funny 25 years later. I did have a renewed appreciation for "Granchester Meadows" on Umaguma, having in the intervening period lived near it in Cambridge and visited frequently. The fly at the end is accurate.

BTW I bought Dark Side of the Moon last night and I've been spinning it constantly. Man, they knew how to record back then.

And I watched the Dark Side of the Moon doc on Netflix (god bless netflix) for an entertaining education.

FYI for those who like their prog on the heavier side... I pulled out my Mastodon collection and am playing Blood Mountain.

Oh man have times changed huh? It's like, I hate to say it, but musicians are just that much more talented these days in terms of sheer raw technical ability.

Like I can think of five drummers off the top of my head who rip Neil Pearts head off.

I think they know how to record now, too. But once it's recorded they crap all over it in the mastering process ( and sometimes in the re-mastering process ). Hell, you can make a recording sitting on your bed these days which will have sound quality rivaling that of many "studio recordings" from the era of DSOTM.

I own all of Mastodon's albums and IMHO they have done nothing which even approaches DSOTM and that's not a knock against Mastodon because very few artists have. The sheer scope of the thing is part of what makes Dark Side the enduring and special work that it is. And that kind of artistic vision isn't something which you can achieve by sitting around running scales all day every day. Too many musicians get caught up in playing their instruments rather than playing music. And for that matter, too many listeners guage music's worth by the technicality of it. It's been said that "music is math" but it can make for some pretty soulless music. Sheer raw technical ability is at best a means to an end.
But that's just my opinion. And I could be wrong...

I haven't heard all of their albums yet. Right now I have Only By The Night and also Because Of The Times. Both are quite good and feature some great songs.

Mastodon isn't soulless riffing. Mastodon jams. We leave the soulless riffing to the malstiens of the world. I wouldn't own music that was just scales played fast. Mastodon plays with soul, but with such sheer dominating prowess. Its ok, Carl Lewis isn't the fastest man in the world anymore either, talent Marches on. There are albums that have come since dsom that have no doubt eclipsed it as well, in any metric you can think of. Doesn't take away from their achievement. Its an incredible album that has stood the test of time.

For the record I am not comparing mastodon with pink Floyd. Apples to oranges, big time. Just referencing the ability argument.

Gear down, Big Rig. As I said in my post, I wasn't knocking Mastodon. I just don't buy into the equation between "raw technical ability" and talent. The technical aspect can be acquired through instruction, practice and repetition. The artistic aspect not so much...

I would also be curious as to the demographics of Tone Magazine and what percentage of your readership you just disrespected with the " geezer " remark. I would venture that as those "geezers" are likely the predominant supporters of your advertisers, you may also want to gear down a bit.

ha,geezers and PF.... your right Tonepub,but i do know one thing,Dave Gilmore can play a MEAN-MEAN six string.i love that shit....also,bands like the Black Crows early,and Allman Bros. kick some crazy ass.you don't find this stuff from new bands unless i am missing it completly.is it just because we grew uo with this great music ?? i don't care,it's the best.....most new bands suck

I have been playing DSOM constantly... and falling in love with it. I even pulled out my copy of The Wall and gave it another chance.

I think part of enjoying Pink Floyd is having a stereo system than can handle them properly. Otherwise they're quite boring. That said I can handle them properly now and I am enjoying it

But moving on, I think that (perhaps it's genetically unavoidable) as we age, we tend to associate most strongly with the music of our youth, and think of that era as having had the best musicians with the most talent. And that everything new coming out is toxic and trash. It was true in 1901 and it's true now.

I try to vigorously repel that instinct. I listen to things far older than my time and also constantly check for new material.

For those of you stuck in the past, strictly listening to a certain span of music: I feel so so sorry for you. You have NO IDEA how much you are missing out on, and it's your loss, not ours.

I will admit to being a big Floyd fan. The more you listen to this band the better it gets. Try the Pulse DVD and play it LOUD. It will blow your mind. Lots of Floyd is great when you have a killer system with great low end capability. Floyd and other rock bands need balls! I would not listen to any Rock at low levels with baby speakers. Rock is supposed to rock you. You should only play it when you are in the mood to ROCK OUT. Everyone in your house should hate you when you play it. The Kick drum should kick you and send your cat flying. Sinatra loud is stupid. Its all a mood thing. Find your mood, pick the right music for your mood, play it at a level that is right for the mood and music.

There was some talk about anger and angst in modern music, and I think that's the problem that I have with today's "metal" and rap/pop music. I start diggin' the groove of rap, or the raw guitar and sheer power of metal, but very soon I find myself in a bad mood because of the hatefulness in the message. Or the consistent tones of doom and despair in metal. Does that make me an old geezer before the age of 50? Maybe.

Or, maybe I just don't care for hostile tones and degrading lyrics in music anymore because there is enough of that in real life.

Yeah, I see this happening too. Last summer I went to an event called Guitar Player Live where aspiring guitar players hang out, hear some music, and get tips in free guitar clinics held by professionals and famous guitar players. What I learned was everybody wants to shred. Shredding is cool, and it's a skill that is way beyond my meager ability, but damn, I got tired of listening to talented guitarist shred shred and shred. Why don't you guys play some music and then shred a little bit in between? You know, as in a guitar solo in a clever song??? No, we start with the solo, then we solo through the solo, and then we solo some more. Now, I will top that by shredding it.

I think this might be happening because we live in an age of instant gratification and desensitized excess. I can't feel anything anymore so let me kick it up a notch.

I think most modern "rock" blows goats.
But "Tool" has some pretty good music. When I'm in the mood to crank the subs, it's AC/DC, Metallica, and Tool.

But 99% of the time, it's Marsalis, Basie, Webster....you know...."real" music.
Oh....and DSotM kicks ass, as does The Wall, and Gilmour's new stuff "Island".
