Cheap or near cheap - system for our pool
« on: 8 Jun 2011, 02:13 pm »
We are almost done building our new pool.

We want music around the pool so to speak.

Can you guys direct me to a sites or other resources regarding techniques and new gear that I should consider?

Thx.

Here's one outdoor speaker to consider:

With regards to speakers, I can't recommend Niles Audio highly enough.  :thumb: I have an older pair of their OS-10's and I would buy another of their outdoor speakers in a heartbeat.

I purchased Sonance Mariner Jr Speakers about 10 years ago, they stay outside (under an eave) and are still going strong.  Of all of the outdoor speakers I demo'ed I liked these the best and would buy them again if I needed another pair.

Best,
Ed

edit*- apparently the Jrs are no longer available but other speakers in the mariner line are.

I got a pair of these for Fathers Day a few years ago. Hooked them up to an old Sony receiver, and have had the cops come three times since due to complainIng neighbors.

They rock!

I got these speakers:

They are all plastic, waterproof and sound good. Get the largest speaker and bass driver you can so you get satisfying bass at reasonable levels. A small speaker will need more volume and annoy neighbors. It is hard for wife to understand that a large speaker plays quieter. But these are pretty BIG, but can be painted to match something.

I power mine with a Sonos amplifier which is very convenient and sounds great, and I can play any music from radio, internet, network or an analog source with one wireless remote, which is also water resistant. Sonos is not cheap, but worth every penny.

I too have been looking for outside speakers.

While in Vegas, I noticed that the music around the pools ar the Aria were outstanding!!

Upon further investigation, they seemed to resemble very large mushrooms (i.e. they had a thinner base, then a large cap, and were approx. 2' in height). The sonic quality emanating from these puppies were truly incredible!?

Any ideas as to what these were?

Maybe a bit pricey ($700 range), but we have a pair of B&W outdoor speakers and they could put a lot of pricey bookshelf spkrs to shame.

Highly recommended.

I picked these up at Costco for $100 and was surprised to find they did not suck.

Here are my Axiom Algonquin outdoor speakers. With no room coloration they are extremely seductive in free air. If pointed toward your house the neighbors will not know they are there. I use a Marcato passive outdoor sub for a tad more bass and power them with a vintage Marantz integrated amp.

This is the Marcato outdoor sub. It has a 10 inch Eminence woofer and blends well with the Axioms.
