Does a TOSlink to USB converter exist?
« on: 26 May 2011, 10:05 pm »
Sorry for the newb question.

I have a new PS3 that only outputs to optical (toslink) and a Tranquility DAC that only accepts a USB signal.  Is there any way to mate them?   I see all sorts of converters available, but none that do this.

I really don't want to buy a 2nd DAC just for the PS3, but have no way of getting the PS3 signal to my amp.

Any assistance is appreciated

For kicks have you tried connecting up your USB DAC to the PS3?    I know the PS3 can work with a USB headset, which is essentially the same as both are USB Audio Devices.

i've read a bunch of posts about the PS3, and am led to believe the 2 usb ports in the front of the player are for input only, like remote joysticks & other peripherals for gaming. i haven't tried it tbh.

the back panel of this PS3 is limited:  LAN connection, HDMI, optical audio & a flat & wide output labeled AV Multi Out which is probably for a HT receiver.

pretty sure guys have modded the cases to output via a pair of rca's, but i don't feel like hacking this thing yet.  i'm trying to avoid buying a 2nd dac, which would be of a lesser quality than my main system dac, due to budget constraints.

i found this $10 cable:    http://gamestuff.ca/av-cable-for-playstation-3-ps3-ps2-p-99.html?zenid=354f4ec91e804bff4749a8d982ac1a23

if this'll output to rca's i'm in business.  not high rez but at least playing through my main system.

i need to send the hdmi output signal to my tv & dac simultaneously. the ps3 is used mainly to watch movies.

if a simple hdmi into 2 hdmi cable is made, i'll go that route.

edit:  i found the hdmi splitters, but only usb to hdmi converters, not the other way around...yet.
