Being a privately held company this will reduce some of the tax burden on his heirs.

Bose is a private company and the "shares" have no value since they cannot be sold. What's to prevent Dr. Bose from "issuing" a few million more shares to dilute MIT's interest. Furthermore, MIT is not entitled to any profit sharing or participation in the running of the company. This a PR stunt, nothing more.
