Good Idea?
« on: 1 May 2011, 07:16 pm »
Danny,

I don't have enough space behind my speakers to allow an OB design.  I was thinking though, sealed version of N3 speakers crossed over to Super V woofer setup with woofers facing sideways instead of front and back.

Would this work well?  Why or why not?

With open baffle speakers you have to face them toward you.

If you turn the woofers sideways the you will be sitting in the area where there is the null (no output).

N3's and a sealed box servo sub works great though.

Thanks,

What max output will the sealed N3s crossed over to a sealed sub at ~80hz give me in a 15x20x8 foot room before distorting?

I don't know. I never pushed them to the point to where they began to distort. If you are feeding them good clean power they can hit some pretty solid SPL levels with ease.

Also the will integrate to the subs better if crossed over to them lower. They will play to a -3db of 40Hz on their own.

Thanks again,

I wasn't clear.  I am looking at the non-transmission line version of the N3 that I understand have a -3 @~80hz.  Is this correct? If so, what crossover would you use for the sealed servo sub? BTW, I would use 1 sub per side.

Ah, with the sealed version you might want to try setting the crossover point of the subs to 60Hz or less for the best integration.

Duhhhhhhhh, I learned about the null this evening after reading Danny's comment.  I've been playing with damping materials while waiting on the SA-1 amp I just ordered and so, I've been keeping the MFW-15 OB sideways for convenience while working.  I knew the sound wasn't right.  Well, I finally bit the bullet and faced it forward.  My-my, quite a difference.  I was going to change the location when I finished with the damping but I'm glad I changed it sooner.  Turning it isn't really that difficult, I'm just a little on the lazy side.

When I was trying to figure out if I could do an OB sub in my small living room I calculated that I could get 3ft by placing one outside of the left speaker and having it fire into the corner of the room. I also have room for one behind me. Since it is playing low frequencies you do have some more placement flexibility than for an OB speaker.

With open baffle speakers you have to face them toward you.

I agree.  I just like the musical quality of an OB sub.  Never had one in the past.  I could use a Behringer to help out but when one thinks about it, in the real world, instruments like a string bass have peaks and dips in any room.  That's the real world so I've decided to live with them.  I can play with placement some, I have a decent area for placement, to a point, but I tickled just to have decent bass.

Ok, how's this...

I like the OB sound in the sub range because I don't like room loading.  However, I have maximum space behind woofer plane of about 20 inches.  I was thinking sideways but now know about null (duh!).

Here is the question.

If I angle the woofer 45 degrees (as in "Toe In"), the null will be 45 degrees the other direction which wouldn't affect me at the listening position.  It would also extend the space behind the woofer from 20 inches to ~28".

How does this work?

That is not much space to have behind an open baffle speaker. Three feet or more is recommended.

Playing with toe in or toe will change how it loads the room. You might find a real sweet spot if you work with them that way.

That's what I thought.  As soon as I cut grass and finish butchering the grille cover, I'll start looking for that sweet spot.

OK, last question.  If I have the room, will the ob sub (as in the SuperV) sound good with the Sealed N3?
