I wouldn't be surprised if you don't like Hum.  I totally understand.  Yet, I am really jonesing for a new Hum record at this time.

I agree. One of the most underated bands. Truley ahead of their time. Suicide Machine is one of my top ten songs of all time.

Yeah, they're one of my favorites. I saw them in a small bar in Champagne, IL before they got big. Incredible concert. You could tell they were going places. You may have it already, but Matt Talbot formed the short-lived band Centaur and the album "In Streams" is very Hum-like, and pretty awesome.

That must have been quite a show.  I saw them at a free outdoor concert in the park in Champaign in, um..it must have been the summer of 1997 or thereabouts.  I can't quite remember why, but I got the vibe that they were surprised by their own success--like they were perfectionists never perfectly satisfied with their output.  Centaur is great but they don't resonate with me quite like Hum.

The last time I played "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" I was trying to think of another band that had a similar sound, and I couldn't come up with one. I went to Amazon and looked at the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section, and none of the bands were remotely similar. Hum was one of the truly unique bands of their time. I like the Centaur album, but it really lacks the electricity of the Hum releases.

Aw man!  That video brings me back.  You are exactly right about the incomparability factor, too.  Autolux?  Silversun Pickups?  Fine offerings, but not Hum substitutes.  Who writes songs about axolotls?  Hum.  That's freakin' who!  (I met a dude who studied axolotls at the U of I, otherwise I would never have heard of such a critter).

Holy crap!  I'd never heard of them before! :duh:  That's why I love this place, though! :thumb:  Very good stuff.  I think I'll pick up a couple of their CDs from Amazon.

Great call!  Can't believe I missed 'em the first time 'round! :o  But I'm correcting it now- spinning Heavenward is Downward right now! :thumb:  I'll get the other ones before long I suppose.

Check these guys out if you like Hum. I don't know why I didn't think of them before.
