Would you buy a BIT 5
« on: 5 Apr 2011, 02:18 pm »
I'm egar to try a Torus(BIT) but I don't want to spring the cash for a 20amp version that would take care of my 7BSST2, so I was thinking a 5 amp version just for the BP26, MPS2, BP1.5, plasma, Bell receiver and in the future the BDA/BDP....
Do you think this is a good idea or wait....

There's a 15a on Cam and a 5a on audiogon(both non AVR) if those interest you.

Volume,

it's not only the sound that has its benefits from a BIT...it's also the protection for your gear. even if your 7B SST² already have the new transformes built in. so i think the question is if the amps really need the protection...if not the smaller BIT would be a boost for your system i guess :thumb:.

Torus is no longer allowing internet sales; however, Audio Advisor has a clearance/demo RM-15 for sale at a really great price.  http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=1TOBAL

I've seen all 3 online but if I'm going to buy 1 I want it to be a matching BIT. If I do the math, technically I need a 20amp BIT for each amp 7BSST at 4ohms. At $6000 that's not happening soon, so I thought start small and buy 1 for the other gear. I read the Torus works wonders  for the BP26.

The 7B SST2 meassures in at about 950 wpc @ 4 ohms.  Divided by 120 volts you will need a little over 8 amps per side to drive it at the full 950 w.  I use one CS15 for both my 7's, MPS2, CD player, and TT and it works just fine.  I'm fairly certain that I don't use half of what's available 98% of the time and would only eclipse its capacity under ear splitting/bleeding/hair on fire SPL's.  It's your money. :thumb:

The 900W @ 4 ohms is the rated output power.  It uses 1980 watts input to produce that power (45% efficiency), and at that maximum output the input current would actually be > 16A.  But I do agree that few will use maximum power and certainly not for any sustained period of time.

Not sure how much those new bits weigh in 15 amps but that one online is an old style heavier one. Those outlets are pretty tight so its nice to have that heavy weight. You can plug things into it easy with out the unit sliding forward. Its pretty much stationary. Those new ones are pretty light and would require holding the Bit to get that plug in. It sounds petty but i hate pluging stuff in due to the awkwardness and those outlets are tight so the weight really helps....lol.

trust me if you plug things in and out lots you want a heavier unit.

Can you test for input power with some kind of meter? It would be interesting to see at 1/2-3/4 volume what it is drawing in power

You need an AC Clamp Meter (Example: http://www.amazon.com/Fluke-Corporation-322-Clamp-Meter/dp/B00012Z0ZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1302128608&sr=8-1) and a Line Separator (Example: http://www.amazon.com/Extech-480172-Line-Separator-Prong/dp/B0000YHN9W/ref=pd_cp_hi_2_img).  You will likely find that you use much less current than you expect.

Cool!

That's the exact model I'm leaning towards for my system.
BIT20 in Black 17"

Did you get green or blue switch light?

Please be sure to post some pics and your thoughts on the unit once you have it connected.

I stuck with the green light to match the other Bryston gear. I don't have a dedicated 20A line yet but it is in the future. I ordered last week and was told up to 30 days to receive it, so I don't have it yet.... that gives me time to try and find some money to pay for it!!

You will love that piece, you will have one of those "what the hell have i been doing all these years" feeling  :duh:"

Make sure they put at least 12gauge in and get them to use 10gauge if you can. Its remarkably not that expensive to go from 12 to 10gauge. You can also convert a 120v line to a 240v if its dedicated. There is just some work at the fuse box and new outlet.
