At what age did you start your music collection???
« on: 31 Mar 2011, 03:48 am »
I see so many amazing, obscure and generally not top 40 (LOL) albums posted here there and all over AC so I wondered- "How old were you when you started your music collection?"

Vinyl, CD,s Tapes, name your poison or mixture and tell us about how old you were when you started to seriously collect and put together your music library.
I started at about 15 lost my collection due to unusual circumstances when I was about 30 and sporadically bought music mostly CD's off and on from then until I got involved with following AC in January 2010 so I've seriously started putting together a music library for about 15 months...so I'll say 52

I started my library about 7 years ago or at age 52 and it was Lonewolf (Chris) who got me started. I was never into long term music storage, as in albums, CD's, cassettes, etc. Quite frankly, I just couldn't see the benefit with all the music sources that were readily available such as FM radio and over 90 gendre specific music channels on my C-band satellite receiver. Computer audio totally changed my perception of having a music library. The sound quality, convenience of both storage and accessibility of the tracks literally changed my life from simple music enjoyment to an actual hobby passion.  8)

It's been 7 years and an expanding libary of over 15,200 albums. At 59, I can only say better late than never.   :thumb:

Had a great vinyl collection of about 500 albums that was was (almost) completely destroyed in a military move in 1991. Got an OK claim from the movers and started my CD collection at that time. Started collecting rare and/or obscure music in 2000, and now that stuff compromises about 70% of my collection of about 1700 discs. I'd probably have around 2500 CD's if I kept everything I've purchased over the years, but I continually purge stuff I don't listen to anymore. I only keep music I like to hear. As for age? I've always had some kind of music collection, so probably 8 years old.

Oh, I also have around 50 music Laserdiscs  8)

I think the first Jimi Hendrix album Are You Experienced was one of my first serious purchases. I bought the album in December of 1967 which would have made me 19 years old. I still have that album along with every album I have bought since '67.

September 1975 I was 12 and I bought my first album, Fleetwood Mac – “Rumours”.  The last LPs I bought were The Talking Heads – “Remain in Light” and “Fear of Music” in June 1984.  Sensing the demise of vinyl I switched to CDs and haven't bought music in any other format since.

Age 15. I remember trying to decide between the Beatles, and Dave Clark Five. i bought the Dave Clark Five album from a nearby drugstore (drugstores were everywhere back then, none of which were a chain, they had soda fountains...) That was my first LP. I joined the Columbia Classical Music Club, even though i knew nothing about classical music, and was glad i did.

I bought the A & M sampler Friends around 1970, age 15. I started even listening relatively late compared to my friends. Come Together was number 10 going off the charts and I remember thinking cripes I missed the Beatles!

Then I had a Lloyds crappy stereo with built in 8 track that I rapidly outgrew. My dad bought it for me, big upgrade over my AM clock radio. Made the guy throw in a tape from a place that sold mainly washer dryers. Bridge Over Troubled Waters, a great title but I had wanted the Stones or Beatles but they were looking to sell air conditioners more than music.

Finally got my first real stereo, Marantz 2230 and Dual 1215S and custom Big Julie speakers in Hempstead Long Island but can't remember the first record I bought! Maybe I was 16? 1971? Have all my records still, maybe lost a couple at college.

I started with 45s back in '65 so I would have been 9 (Stones, Kinks, mostly British Invasion stuff - my sister did the Motown stuff so we had it covered). I bought my 1st album Yardbirds Little Games when it came out in '67 so I really started when I was 11.

Rolling Stones "Between the Buttons" when it came out it mid-sixties.  I can't claim to always have great taste-a few years back my sister was cleaning out our parents house and she brought over a bunch of my old 45's-including a Sonny and Cher one.

I had a paper route then and had lots of disposable income.  And LPs were $3 or so down at Grants.

I've been involved in LPs, CDs and tape trading (concerts).  Made tons of cassettes back in the day but only bought one or two commercial ones.

First record was when I won a 7" single of Oingo Boingo "Just Another Day" in a grade school raffle. Then the math tells me I must've been 10 years old when my mom bought me Herbie Hancock's "Future Shock".  Serious cassette buying didn't truly kick in until freshman year of high school wherein a steamer trunk was rapidly filled with beautiful, fragrant cassete tapes.  Too bad kids today have no smell to associate with iTunes. Hmph.

I'm surprised by so many similar experiences with loosing collections, gear etc....

My first stereo was a HS graduation present:
 Marantaz 2230
 Dual TT (model# ??)
JBL L-26 speakers--all my friends wanted my speakers and I wish I still had them..
First Album- Johnny Winter "Still Alive and Well" or a Rick Derringer abum--can't remember name or which one was actually first..
 Good stuff... :thumb:

16 no decent stereo til 76 Sony STR 7065 receiver Philips 312 TT and Infinity speakers back then there was No fancy cords of any kind 16 gauge wire and the cheapest interconnects made and we didn't think about it once it was all about the music and still is. I could go back to that stereo in a second.
A ton of my influence came from KQRS radio station the station had just plain one hell of a music experience.

If my math is correct (?) at a pace of 1 album per day, it will take you 41 years to listen to your complete collection!!!  I hope your gym membership dues are paid for a good long while, this way you can make sure you're around at 100 years old to keep listening!  Even if you subtract the 7 years you've been involved, it'll still take you to 93!

:thumb:

Then again, there are two other considerations here:
   1) You don't buy any more new music
   2) Your ears are still working at 93

At about 12 in 1970. My dad went to a record store to get me an album. Asked the store clerk what to get me. Brought home Frank Zappa Hot Rats. Wow. Listening mostly to top 40 radio up to that time, needless to say I was blown away.
I still play the album and love it.

Probably around 1966. I had some stuff on 45RPM. I do remember having Magic Carpet Ride in 1968, but there were others before.

I think my first 12"LP might have been something by the Doors or America, but that is waaaaay to long ago.

My first two lps were Deep Purple- Made in Japan and Deep Purple- Greatest Hits, thanks to my sister. I believe it was for my 15th birthday.
Gave away my lp collection when I emigrated to the US 13 years ago. Arrived with 3 suitcases, one of which was full of cds. Been steadily rebuilding the lp collection since then.

While I never kept an audio libary til i was 52, I have always had a multichannel audio system. Here's my 1st really good system after getting out of the Army at age 20.

Marantz Model 22 Stereo Receiver

Sansui QS-800 Rear Channel Matrix amp

4 Acoustic Research AR-3A's

Teac A-6010 Semi-Professional Reel To Reel

Garrard Zero 100SB Turntable

Koss ESP-9 Electrostatic Headphones (heavy as hell)

For the day, it was a killer sounding system (can't believe I was actually able to find pictures of everything). I only used the Garrard turntable to record my friends albums onto the Teac. But tape doesn't hold up long term and all my tapes got discarded. This won't happen with my Hard Drive library. My only regrets are that I'm not 20 years old now.

Robin
