USB 802.11 dongles
« on: 29 Mar 2011, 10:47 am »
Hi, I want to move my old mini "music server" downstairs so I can try USB playback, and so it needs to sprout itself some wireless connectivity. Only for remote control, and for syncing libraries. AE is overkill and too $$, does anyone have experience with the cheap dongles on EBay? e.g. here and here.

I haven't tried those specific models, but have used cheap $15 dongles with no issues. As long as they claim they are OSX compatible, you should be fine.

Cool, thank you. I'll get one and give it a shot.

If that doesn't work I've got an old AE you could have (if I can find it )  Of course, it's the wrong voltage, but should work with an adapter.  Let me know if that sounds good and I'll start digging around.

Hi Mark, thank you! :thumb: Actually I just went and ordered one of the $15 dongles, if it doesn't work I'll be pinging you on that AE ;)

Just to update on this, the $15-with-free-postage dongle works fine with my old Mac G4 and also an old Win XP laptop. Helps make some of this old junk useful! The G4 is now downstairs playing music, the Win laptop will go into SO's study as a playback solution. The network connection will be used to sync the library across machines and of course for remote control.

Amazing how cheap things are these days...
